I remember my parents spending a great deal of time in front of the old black and white.

We lived on the north shore of Lake Erie and were quite aware of the increased war readiness.

October 18, 1767, Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon complete their survey of the boundary between the colonies of Pennsylvania and Maryland as well as between what would become the states of Delaware and West Virginia.
This became known as the Mason-Dixon Line.

On the 24th of October 2003 - Concorde made her last commercial flights. I will ever forget that, and do miss seeing her overhead on her approach to Heathrow.

On the 24th of October, 1945 The United Nations officially came into existence when the Charter had been ratified by China, France, the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom, the United States and by a majority of other signatories.

October 29, 1998 John Glenn returns to space. Over 40 years after he became the first American to orbit the earth in Friendship 7 he returned to space as a payload specialist on the Space Shuttle discovery. At the age of 77, he became the oldest person ever to travel in space.
 
October 29, 1929 The Stock market crashes, becoming a main factor in the cause of the Great Depression affecting the United States and many other countries for the next decade, needing the onset of WWII to finally bring the US out of the depression.

7th November, 2012. The actor Clive Dunn, who played Mr Jones in Dad's Army, died.

He was a great comedy actor and will be missed.

November 15, 1891; Erwin Rommel, the German commander known as the Desert Fox was born in Heidenheim, Germany. Rommel was most famous for his exploits in North Africa during World War II.
