5th January, 1993 oil tanker MV Braer, carrying 85,000 tonnes of crude oil ran aground in hurricane force winds off the Shetland Islands.
The tanker was on its way from Norway to Canada when it lost power in Force 11 gales.

I was working in Montreal when the "Braer" wrecked. I remember the incident well and helped develop the news coverage on this side of the Atlantic.
