1985 today hurricane elena (name retired in 1986 never to be used again for an atlantic hurricane) parked itself approx 90 miles west/northwest of tampa bay florida. it sat there relentlessly hammering us with over 70mph winds, for three very long days. i was in my second year of living in pinellas county (pinellas point 50 yards from the bay!) and quickly realized this was something i hoped to never experience again! luckily, that was my worst experience with hurricanes while living in florida for 25 more years.
