September 3, 1944: diarist Anne Frank and her family are placed on the last transport train from the Westerbork transit camp to the Auschwitz concentration camp, arriving three days later.

Comment:
From where on October 30, 1944 both Ann and her sister Margot were transported to the Bergen-Belsen camp where they both died of typhus only a few weeks before the camp was liberated by British troops on April 15, 1945.

September 4 - 1987 - West German pilot Mathias Rust was convicted by a Soviet court and sentenced to four years in a labor camp. The charges were concerning his daring flight into Moscow's Red Square. He was released after one year.
