Saving Blobs

Jaxtah said:
Couple of questions please. I'm not jb'n but may decide to do so in the future, I'm still new to my iPad2 and the whole new way of thinking involved with it having been a complete Windows user for too many years to mention.
I've read the link posted above about "All you need to know about Blobs" bit am still left wondering if someone can help clear the waters for me on these issues please:

1. Am I right in understanding that I need to save blobs now in case I want to jb in the future?
2. I recently synched my iPad 2 days ago - am I right in thinking that this process did not save my blobs?
3. Tiny Umbrella does not appear in the iTunes Store for me, probably because of my location (UAE), is there something else I can use for an un-jb'd iPad2?

Apologies if these are questions which have been asked before - if so please direct to the correct thread :)
Thanks in advance for any replies to point in the direction.

1. Yes. I think apple closed the window but I don't know.
2. Yes, syncing has nothing to do with shsh.
3. Tiny umbrella is a program for windows, it doesn't come in the app store. Just google "tiny umbrella" ( it's also known as "the firmware umbrella")

Thank you Speedlever & Graywolf for your prompt replies and clearing up those queries for me - especially why I couldn't find Tiny Umbrella. Now I know where to find it I'll go and install it asap.
**** and puts head in hands in shame for not looking there before posting ****

Appreciate your time to help an enthusiastic newbie who is slowly finding their way around the Apple world of doing things ;)

Have just updated my SHSH and it is still signing 4.3.3.........so hurry, before it's to late!

Ps the reason mine wasn't already done was because I received an error whilst doing it, so rushed to do the jailbreak before it was removed........recently after reading a lot of information that is freely available on this site, I was able to come to a much wiser decision.

Apple iPad forum is the best site I know for easy to understand information, if you read the information that is given to you, you can't go wrong!!

:D

Good morning all, from the great (wet) Pacific Northwest of the USA.... OP here. I just got relocated yesterday afternoon (living and really living in a motorhome in my retirement).

I did manage to get the 4.3.3, as well as the 4.3.4 and other SHSH dealies saved. I'm presuming that because I have the blobs saved locally on my computer, that the Cydia involvement really isn't necessary. Is saving on Cydia servers done so that if one doesn't have access to the original computer used to save them, they will be available online?

Anyway, it does seem serendipidous that I decided to purchase the iPad (two weeks ago about), found the JB, and also discovered the potential Apple update washout and solution, all in such a brief period of time.

I also deeply appreciate the helpfulness of the group here, and am noticing an uncharacteristic politeness of the participants. You know what I mean... a lot of forums can be populated by a bunch of jackasses. SO, hope this all works out for everyone. I think I've managed to save my day, unwittingly.

(OOOhh... another really important question) In another thread where the poster was trying to restore, was the comment about downloading the 4.3.3 OS software. Is it necessary and/or important to do that also, NOW!?? This would be a good time for me to do that because I'm using my buddy's Internet by WiFi.

Thanks again,

The blobs are saved on the Cydia server so when you go to restore, tiny umbrella re-routes iTunes from looking for the apple server for blobs, to Cydia.

And perhaps a little nicer language. Edited ~ I don't see a problem with jackass. It's an animal. Let's stay on topic. SP

As for downloading, the os will always be available on this forum, so no need to rush. But, when you download 4.3.4, iTunes deletes 4.3.3 from your computer.

Jaxtah, mine did this the first time, make sure you read the first page of this thread, make sure the second and third tick box is unchecked before you do it.
Hope this helps you, let us know

Hi Rambler, thanks for your reply :)

Re the checked boxes, yes, I had my iPad open on that page for reference as I was doing it on the pc and made sure I had unchecked the 2nd and 3rd.
I'm confused as to why it kept asking me did I have Internet connection (?), I even ran it a 2nd time after checking that I could open my usual web sites and got the exact same report.
One thing though, iTunes decided to try and sync the first time I did it and it also put up a message saying 4.3.4 was available and did I want to download and install - I just hit 'cancel' - hope that was ok?

Maybe I should try again?

Yes, Jaxtah, do try again. It appears as if as of right now, Apple is still signing 4.3.3. In addition, I see from your picture that Tiny Umbrella (TU) didn't even save anything from iOS 5, of which there is at least one beta out there that Apple is signing.

I say this because I just ran TU and it gave me no errors on 4.3.3 or iOS 5 betas.

Make sure you have Tiny Umbrella version 5.00.05. And, maybe a re-boot of your PC... Ah, and what the heck, have iTunes closed (though I've never noticed a difference, myself ... couldn't hurt).

Good luck.

Marilyn

Hi Marilyn,

Well, I just tried again and no luck ... I am running the latest version of TU, did a pc and iPad restart before trying again to make sure everything was clean, no iTunes (no anything) loaded and the same log report 0 SHSH's saved to cache.

Any ideas/suggestions would be welcome, thanks in advance :)

Do you have internet connectivity? Or is your Firewall blocking TU?

Well as far as I know I have Internet connection, I checked I could get onto FB, but that's not to say my AVG isn't blocking it I suppose (?)
Next step disable my AVG?
Not too sure how to do this . . .embarrassed to admit this . . . never had to do it before as I've always tried to stay away sites that ask me to disable my firewall.

AVG is AntiVirus not a FireWall - are you Windows or Mac? Which version? Do you have a FireWall installed or do you not know?

Okay, how about trying this?

Go to Cydia and download the [free] tweak iSH*SH*it (remove the asterisks ... I had to put them in to get around the forum's profanity filter...).

When it downloads (you'll get an icon). Open the icon and try two things:

1) Under "Firmware" - press the arrow so you can select all versions. Then, ensure the "Via Cydia" line is checked. After that, press the blue "Save" button at the top.

If that doesn't work...

2) Uncheck the "Via Cydia" line (ensuring "All versions" still shows in Firmware). Again, press the Save button. You should get a notice of a successful save of 4.3.3.

Once you've got the blobs (you're good even if it's just 4.3.3), you can e-mail them to yourself from within the Cydia app for storage elsewhere.

Hurry on this...no telling when the 4.3.3 window will close.

Hope this helps (cause I don't know what's wrong with your Tiny Umbrella...).

Marilyn

P.S. I'm assuming you are jailbroke ... else you can't get to Cydia...
