That sort of thing happening in a match is great. The bit about football that is so off-putting is the spitting...

The guy who beat Nadal at Wimbledon was spitting like crazy........I'm surprised that they don't have rules about this!

Thanks! We just got it... So silly, it's obvious...:-)

Gabriel, are you a cryptic type? Or not?
Just interested.
My father was into cryptics big time & all my life since I've felt sort of guilty about being completely fogged by them. He considered the concise not worth bothering with. :-(

I heard that we are the only people who do them. Is that correct? Someone here will put it right, no doubt :-)

Oh no, cryptics are not for me, I'm far to simple!

Didn't catch that. And am also very surprised, especially at Wimbledon.
Yuk, would have turned it off.

Good! That's a relief. We can both be simple together :-)

I read of a British reporter who was working in Japan. At the time, they didn't know cryptics (probably do now?), but they all competed diligently on their concises on the train commute.

What he did was work out his Times cryptic beforehand, then once on the train, start "working" on it...

The Japanese were very interested and wanted to help of course. They very helpfully studied the clues... didn't have a clue ... at a complete loss ... but he filled them in steadily, after some suitable groaning, angst & brain-cell trauma, to their astonished respect! The next day, he "checked" his correct answers.
Now, THAT'S funny!!

(A bit naughty of him... but absolutely no disrespect to any Japanese of course. :-) )

Here's a link for anyone at sea about cryptics:

That figures! In panoramic close-up?...
Not funny.

Luckily he was knocked out in his next match......I don't fancy seeing that when they broadcast the finals in 3D this weekend!

Federer safely through to next round earlier. Now back to Murray...
They had to slide that new roof on again... Hard to fathom the drought / hose pipe ban a few weeks ago :-)

Well, looking at the forecast they may be better opening the roof, letting centre court fill up and play water polo instead!
