The "Anything Goes" thread

I researched an inventor in the world of audio and FM Radio, Edwin Armstrong, to see whether I could post about him on the "This Day in History" thread. I couldn't.

However, I found that he was pursued by a rival, De Forest (who had developed "audion" tubes) , for patent infringements. There was quite a battle royal which was messy and costly. I hope others in the forum will find this biographical essay of interest. I know for certain 2 of you guys in Canada will :) http://world.std.com/~jlr/doom/armstrng.htm. I trust the link is OK and acceptable.

I have just checked the link. For me, it won't open from my post. However copy and paste the link into Safari. The first hit in the search results is the page in question.

Thanks for this Richard. In Canada, it's largely regulation that keeps AM radio alive. But FM is struggling. With exception of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, (CBC), music is the dominant format
on FM stations. But commercial music programming is losing its appeal to digital delivery. FM will have to embrace talk like AM before it otherwise it will become irrelevant too.

We had a few FM stations go to talk. They had to flip back to music because of the ratings. I really hope FM music hangs around. Not all of us have satellite radio and I really don't want to pay for music. This thing is like the Internet. I bet one will have to pay or pay more to get online with no ads. The pop ups, banner ads, etc are everywhere.

FM talk formats have to be a hybrid of "hot talk"
with a smattering of music. And the host(s) have to be engaging.

Howard Stern is the only host to ever get it right.

A city worker who was painting traffic markings on a street in downtown Chicago obviously had way too much time on his hands:D

Very funny:-)

Looks very small?
If it is, how on earth could he "draw" accurately enough like this--with what I presume must be a pretty big machine for doing miles of lines?

And will the perpetrator be arrested for defacing the road?:-)

I would suggest this was no random act.

Note how the Chicago character looks more mechanical than human.

Your reference to "big machine" is prescient. And supports my theory that we are on the brink of a machine intelligence rebellion that will think humanity to its knees.

IMHO. ;)

Oh Lordy..........
That's SO spot on.
How could I have been so blind?
Already noted is the "raised" effect of some "body parts", as if it's in the process of... ??
Well, at the very least, kicking a passing football.
But obviously something much nastier, thought-wise,

Am now switched to High Alert Red Mode, waiting for instructions.
Commander, Sir.

You know we saw this coming don't you?
Chicago after all gave rise to a star athlete named after a machine. William "Refrigerator" Perry. A "football" player! (Insert collective gasp here).

After my collective gasp, I note that those few of us who have had the veils torn away--so brutally & suddenly--from our eyes are now witnessing up close what we are up against--sheer ignorant ridicule & giggles from the hoi polloi.

But Richard, the very proof lies in this very photo you *say* you took yesterday at the BM.

What the heck can this thing BE, other than something very footballish & nasty?

And it looks suspiciously machine like.

Hah... but that's exactly what you are *meant* to think...but I ask you to just pause & look at it again.

In fact a rather swish, neatly re-designed Centurion Tank-like object comes to mind, don't you agree?

So!!!
