Yes, it's a flipping monster. The scale of the first proposals were cut back following objections early on in the Town Planning consultations.

I recall seeing a TV programme about London where they said that Londoners were all against the building of a real monstrosity in the middle of London because it was ugly, an eyesore.......I believe it's now known as St Paul's Cathedral......just sayin'

The Archangel

Lol. You are so right. It was an eyesore in its day. It's called evolution. Buildings like the Shard and The Gherkin are iconic. There are more but I'm sure Gab could answer that one far better than I. I'll reserve judgement until its built. This same conversation is going on in Christchurch about their cathedral. Change is good. Don't get me wrong some of the historical ones are beautiful too but there is a place for everything. Just saying!

I must have been about 8 when I first heard about these contemporary descriptions of St Paul's. It was described as "awful, pompous, artificial and amusing".

You would think that Christopher Wren's work was being trashed, but what has evolved since the time of the description is the use and meaning of the words.

"Awful" meant "awe-inspiring", "amusing" meant "amazing", "artificial" meant "artistic". No idea what "pompous" may have meant in those days, but presumably it also had a different connotation.

I googled it's measurements after looking at your pictures. That's a huge piece of art!

Recently got back from Shoreline. Passed the Computer History Museum on the way. I remember going there in October 2011. I highly recommend going there if you ever happen to be in the area. Also, it's on the same street as the Google and LinkedIn headquarters :D

The museum itself is one of the most beautiful buildings I've ever seen, especially the lobby area. Here are some pictures of the architecture:

Yes, it certainly looks good, Goofy. The foyer looks like a conservatory.

BTW, if you enjoy architecture, have you checked out the architecture thread?

Thanks for sharing your photos and commentary :)

If you think this mosaic is large, look up the Picasso sculpture in Daley Plaza, also in Chicago. It's 50' tall!

Thank you for the hint. I found it in Wikipedia.
Do you have informations about the weight of the mosaic? I couldn't find anything.
Chicago seems to be a very interesting city, when I think of all the pictures I've seen of it in iPF.

I have no idea how much the mosaic weighs. The basic structure is reinforced concrete.

Calculating that looks like a challenge for the engi wets amongst us ;)
