What's new

The London Olympics 2012

What are friends for? I'd hate to see all that expenditure go to waste! Coming from education, I wish the government would rethink their sports education budget. Our school is struggling with what they allocate and we are a sports college? We can't afford to use the adjacent swimming pool/courts etc because we don't have enough money. My daughter didn't swim this last year due to budget cuts!
Is there an epetition for this?

The baton handover is the weak link in relay races. Athletes need to practice, put the baton in the correct hand, match pace quickly. No need to look back and check where the baton is etc. The poor handovers are as bad as England trying to score penalties ;)

Can't understand why we are so bad at that???
It's something that can be taught--I remember we were all drilled in doing it right during sports at SCHOOL, no less. What's wrong with the coaching?

I don't know whether there is an epetition about funding for school sports. I expect there may be. Yes, the PM talks good talk, let's see some action. Perhaps the lottery funds can subsidise the school sports programmes.

There is an historical parallel here. The museums in S. Kensington continue to be part funded from the legacy of the Great Exhibition at Hyde Park.

Sports education is, to me an essential part of teaching children social skills and encouraging them to succeed in a competitive world- a basic part of a good skill set for life.

True enough, Stranding. Mind you I have forgotten the drills in relay baton handovers :).

It's been a great 2 weeks though.

I think there needs to be some kind Olympic legacy fund, set up with any profits from the games and used to maintain facilities, construct new ones as necessary and most important,to provide financial support to help educate and train the young athletes of the future. Athletes already at the elite level already receive support in varying degrees but the young athletes just starting out need the support to train to the degree necessary to attain that level.

Agreed. We don't have swimming contest anymore. Our sports days however has many events from Paralympic events to dancing. The athletics tends to be a bit slapdash. I help run this event.

Do you include any mountain biking or BMX on the sports day? I'm interested in what is included now in schools.

The MBing is on now, at a "mountainous" farm venue in..... Essex!!! They have built a very good-looking course, with tons of imported Derbyshire gritstone. SCARY:-( but one of our e*a*s*y "sitting-downs":-)

Q: They mentioned how much more weight the paint adds to the carbon fibre bike frame.
A: ? Anyone?

No medals, but a big hug in the best Olympic spirit:-)

Trivia snippet: Red is heavier than other colours.

Does anybody know what they will do with the new building and event areas after the Olympics is over?

Hopefully keep most of it going. The area is looking so much better than before. I'm watching the cycling at Hadleigh Farm

Some of it,such as the equestrian facilities in Greenwich Park, will be dismantled immediately after the games.

Spot on, congratulations! Come on over, if you dare, for your HUG:-):-)

Did you hear anything about how much more the red added on?

I would really like to know more about that.
When dying yarn, the red always seems to turn out heavier than other colours. No idea why, but this connection with red paint is interesting. May be to do with which red pigment is involved, but not convinced there. But I'm no chemist.

Some will be taken down to be reused in other parts of the UK. The velodrome and swimming pool continue to be used after modification.

The future os the stadium is uncertain. Hence the petition activity. The upper tier of the stadium will go. One building is to be used at Rio for 2016.

The BMX track will be adapted and become a feature in a linear cycling network.

The Olympic legacy promise is to keep facilities.

There will be an Olympic museum on site. ( see one of my long posts with photos). I do hope enough will be done to attract people to Stratford, E London to help the local economy.

Not sure about the red but I am watching the same thing as you.
