Updating IOS on someone elses PC

Tried a search on this but not much luck.

Friend of mine will be visiting me soon and has asked if I can give him a hand updating IOS on his iPad1. I don't think he has ever done an update yet.

Can this be done on my PC, if so a few laymans instructions and hints would be appreciated.
