I love historical romances and of course they are often set in London. It sounded horrific to live in the slums. My daughters love Horrible Histories so they know a lot too. They have both taken history as their chosen subject. How about that for the success of HH. Let's hope the BBC keep running that program for many more years.

Yes, isn't amazing how popular they have made history in schools? They have cleverly latched onto what children love- the coarser side of life, to be genteel!

Think Rotten Row is still used for riding, isn't it? In that case it would be classified as a "bridleway".

Have clear memories of my Dad, when we lived in SE24, whenever he heard the call of the rag and bone man passing by with his horse & cart, would pick up his bucket & shovel & race out to get the droppings before anyone else! For his roses, in case anyone is wondering :-)

Yes, Rotten Row is.

Snap. But it was when the Unigate milkman was delivering in my Gran's street in Ealing.

Had forgotten all about the milkman's horse & cart. I have a feeling he was Express Dairies-- it was a long time ago. I seem to remember there were lots of horses around, pulling carts of all sorts. They were all big, heavy horses, usually looking knackered & bored, poor things.

Why do you think my roses grow so well? I have a horse and pony to supply them.

Is that good?

It is for me. The lake that I fired my teeshot over contains several thousand golf balls. I reached the back of the green with my 5 iron, chipped with a 51° wedge to within two inches of the hole and sunk it with a tap-in. Later in the round I holed a 20+ yard putt for a bogey on a par 5. Those are the kind of things that keep me going back for more.

After how many attempts, and lost golf balls?

First attempt. If you put your first ball in the lake your next tee shot needs to find the hole to break par. That has actually been done on that hole. The kid who did it thought he'd made a hole in one, but it was just a really good par. Bet he was gutted.

You're ahead of me. Just about to brew my second, then I have to go help a friend move house.

As I know you're in the business of hauling and heavy lifting, are you moving the contents or entire structure?

Love the bits of history (fact and fiction) that you Brits have been talking about.

I've always especially loved London because of the various British authors I'd read long before I visited for the first time. I always imagined the settings of books, so it was surreal when I first started visiting London and started stumbling across the actual places where some authors had set their books.

This place sounds like another level of surrealness:

Just the contents. The concept of moving an entire house may be a bit strange to our European members, so next time I see it, I'll post some pictures. It happens quite regularly here. It's quite a sight to see a whole house trundling down the road on a semi-trailer.
