What's new

What I see in my backyard...

I've found this grapevine growing on a backyard fence a few blocks from home. <img src="http://www.ipadforums.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=45428"/>

That grapevine is flourishing. The heat must suit it. I expect the grapes will be sour, but good for wine or preserve making.

A hummingbird sampled my bee balm, but didn't stay long. This slightly blurry picture is the best one I got. Of course, the bird wings blur anyway.

I see hummingbirds just a few times a year. I've tried hummingbird feeders, but I usually see them on a flower. Others in the area have them hang around but they stay just a day or two no matter what I have out. They like fuchsias too.

This is a good time to hang a hummingbird feeder in Wisconsin, as the southward migration of adults is well underway and this summer's fledglings are starting to hit feeders. Mix your own syrup, one part white granulated sugar to four parts tapwater. Boiling is not necessary. Clean the feeder and change the syrup when it starts getting cloudy from bacteria growth, or if black mold appears. Streamers of fluorescent surveyor's tape will help the hummers find your feeder.

As the migration picks up, few of the birds you see were there yesterday, or will be tomorrow--soon, there will be a near-total daily turnover, but you can't tell because they all look and behave pretty much the same. By mid August, most of the hummingbirds you'll see had spent the breeding season in Canada, as far north as Slave Lake, AB.
