What is Airport function on Ipad

I am new to ipad. What Airport for in the settings. When I switch it on my net is not working. I am using Wimax provided by Nawras tel co. in Oman

Turning ON Airplane mode will turn off all device communications (wifi, cellular, bluetooth, etc). It is designed as a flight safe mode for when you are travelling by plane so that your device does not interfere with the flight instruments. Most modern electronic devices have a flight safe mode built in for this reason.
