Apple iPad 2 - Big deal or not?

I find it amusing that when the iPad first came out, people were flipping out over the 499$ base price.

Now competition is trying to catch up, and can't even touch this price point or form factor.

I think Mr Lee is simply brave enough to state out loud what everyone is thinking and feeling. In the big picture, it doesn't change anything: Apple's competitors know exactly where they are in terms of their products to Apple's, even if they don't yet quite know how to close that Grand Canyon-sized gap. (Maybe kidnap Apple's R&D team?)

I agree, the competition is even admitting they aren't good enough. I'm sure they want to have apple's R&D team.

In hardware, I would agree. Apple is exceptional at creating quality hardware. Software however I would have to say that Honeycomb is a better platform than iOS 4.21 by a mile. In respective marketplaces, Apple wins hands down. Android has no video or music marketplace yet such as itunes. The apps on Android market are increasing in quality at an insane rate and in many cases are better than their iOS counterparts, but the App Store has more high quality apps and a bigger bank of quality games. It will be interesting to see what Google does to counter this imbalance.

I will not be buying the Ipad2 unless it has some big changes, like extensive memory other than that I will not be buying it.

Apple won't be making anymore changes to the iPad until they release the 3rd generation next year.

Actually, thinking on this again, building up a good R&D technical team isn't hard at all: there are any number of mad ninja-skilled engineers that you can hire if you know where to look and have the right package to attract them. This is one aspect of the problem, and a small one when you get down to it.

The bigger underlying challenge to Apple's competitors (which Mr Jobs has also suggested in not so many words) is in changing their mindset towards designing their products with a superior experience for the customer - making it easy and efficient and fun to own and use. Merely slapping together the latest hardware and software components in itself won't win you any battles - in fact, looking at the Xoom and Tab and how they're struggling to gain a foothold in the market, it doesn't even begin to get you into the game.

Diehard fanboys will complain about Apple and the iPad until the end of time. But the fact is, the majority of consumers don't care why "Android is better" or "is 256M of RAM enough" or "Flash doesn't run." All they know is that it has an Apple logo on it, and that it's easy and fun to use - and, most importantly, there are a lot more of them with a #@&kload of money to throw at Apple, than a handful of self-professed technology connoisseurs.

Not a big deal

I gotta admit, I like the look but there's just not enough change to put me back in the buy it section. I mean the os update is great. But to have a phone better than a huge iPod is a little upsetting. I've been hooked on all apple products but I think I'll wait for the iPad 3. I got the first gen, all iPhone gens MacBooks and stuff. But the bother for me is not much change. Faster is definitely great but just adding cameras doesnt work for me. I already don't use the camera on my MacBook that much and to hold up a big pad is even more clunky. I'm still looking to find the reason to upgrade but at the moment to at the least not improve for retina display is a really cheap missing upgrade bummer. Riding the fence here folks... Any real pros I've found to many cons? Really want to justify the purchase. But I dont see it happening. Maybe apple should get a poll going with real consumers to see what the product is missing, not bloggers and apple employees.

Truth the xoom looks good on paper but no one wants something to advance. They want to surf the web, play angry bird, tweet about their day , and check their friends statuses. Thats where android is messing up. They're like some nerds trying to be cool but the football player (ipads) just laugh at them and get all the girls(consumers)

Uh, all of those things that you quoted the xoom does much better than the iPad. Bad choices. Browsing on the xoom is much faster than on the ipad, and eventually it will even support flash. Angry birds is free on android and it plays flawlessly on the xoom.

The ipad has the xoom beat with media. Itunes music store, video store, Netflix, etc.

From what i have seen of the iPad 2, it looks like the xoom will be better than it as well for web browsing. While the ipad 2 was fast, i noticed in the quick hands on that it still reloaded the pages when you switched tabs and hit the jack button. That is dissapointing.

I'm stating to a mass appeal. People will look a the xoom, playbook, g-slate,flyer, and any other tab as a copycat and confusing. Where as the ios is straight to apps and great games. I'm back on the ipad 2 bandwagon:D

I am beginning to wonder how sad it must be when the only thing you can judge a product by is whether or not it has flash. I hated flash before the iPad and now I really despise it and its fanboys.
