What's new

Food anyone?

Mmm. Ribena -- I love black currant-flavored anything, but it's not popular in the U.S., so it's hard to come by here. I've been craving black currant candies since I ate the last of my supply, hoarded during my travels.

Does anyone British know what this candy is called: It's sold in rolls -- chewy black currant jellies encrusted with sugar crystals. I want to ask friends who are visiting to bring me some, but I have no memory of what they're called. The wrapping was purple, and the rolls were longer and skinnier than a roll of Lifesavers.

Is this them, we have these ones....I love them too!

Yes, it does sound like fruit pastilles. We tend to buy them with mixed varieties because we love different flavours.

Sent from my new iPad using iPF

Do they have them in mint, if they are what I'm thinking I love them too

Oh yes, joy! Thank you! Going to ask for a suitcase load, lol.

I see I'm not the only one who suffers from this addiction to British candy etc. We have Brit stores here, where you can buy goods marked with the British price for around 10 times the price! My wife is the addict, not me.

Prawn cocktail chips have to be so bad for you.

Yes, addiction is exactly it.

Are the prawn chips the same as the Asian ones? Yes, not exactly health food, lol, but they sure do go down easy!

We have Brit stores here too, can't say I like it all.

Fruit pastilles have been here forever though.

Hayles....I like the mixed flavored ones also!

No. They taste repulsive (going from memory).

I quite like the Asian prawn crackers. We have quite a good import section in our stores, and West Edmonton Mall has a Chinese supermarket.

Strange, never seen a tube here with anything but the mixed lot. If they come in one- flavour rolls, I would go for the orange, every time!

They have going for years, haven't they? Gives you a nice warm feeling that some things stay the same...
Can remember buying them from the tuck shop in Dulwich Village (London SE 2?) on the way home from Infant school when I was 5. That's a very long time ago...

We used to have mixed-flavored tubes as kids, but they were some other brand, and without the crust of sugar crystals. They also were super chewy, so tough that in Chinese they're commonly called elephant-hide candy, lol. Also loved those. They were so tough and sticky, sometimes you'd have to force your little jaws open once they welded your teeth together, lol.

They only ever came in mixed or the blackcurrant, here anyway.
I always went for the orange, actually I do that in any kind of jelly sweet, lemon next.

Yes it does give you that feeling of comfort when you see familiar items, a little weird though when travelling overseas and seeing an item in a foreign language. :)

I think they might be what we call here "wine gums". Don"t know why; as far as I know they didn't have any wine in them, just fruit flavouring. But they are hard & solid & yes, stick your teeth together! I always liked the softer pastilles best & the crunchy sugar. No wonder we are all toothless! :-)

Snap! Orange for me always in anything, then lemon. That goes for chocs with fruity centres in a mixed box too, say Quality Street or Terry's All Gold. But it has to be good plain chocolate, none of yer milk desecration. But fruit centres seem quite rare in a box of chocs now, sadly
