Food anyone?

Just had my first taste of this fruit. My mom was delighted to find it at the international market. The fruit is called, Rumbutan. It's the same as a lychee, but very different outer skin. My mom and her family enjoyed this as kids.

...what it looks line unpeeled! It was very juicy and sweet. It had a large white seed in the center. It was tasty! :)

What a strange looking fruit! Is it eaten raw or cooked?

Flashback. I took a road trip with friends and they were eating those and a bunch of other tropical fruits as I drove from Toronto toward the U.S. We had stopped in Chinatown and they couldn't resist buying. It was a race to eat as I drove, because you can't bring produce across the border, lol. I had to stop the car so we could pour water over everyone's sticky hands.

Yum. That looks delicious.

It was delish--you would like it, Hayles! :)

You peel and eat it. After I took the pic--it was gone in 2 secs! It was very good!:)

I figured you'd know about this fruit, Kaykaykay! When we were in Toronto many years ago, we went to Chinatown. There, I had my first fresh Lychee. Prior to that I only had the Lychee juice or canned fruit. They are very sticky too. The peel was a bit tough to peel and the fruit itself is quite juicy and have to be eaten in sections to avoid eating the seed inside!

Love tropical fruits, but most are a messy pain to eat. I like to eat that kind of stuff at home so I can make a pig out of myself and then wash up, lol.

Love the tropical fruit selection in Toronto Chinatown. There's a produce store on Spadina that I'd like to just pull up a chair at, and eat up like a pig at a trough, lol.

I am the same way, but there certainly are foods that I would rather enjoy at home. Sometimes the food can become quite messy, like peeling shrimp or cracking crab legs! Haven't been back to Toronto in about 10 years, but now seems to be something that needs to be done again. Fortunately we have our International Market here and it's really close if I need something fun to have! :)

Agree on shrimp and crabs. We go to Asian markets for a lot of produce, but we don't have enough variety or quantity. Longons are my favs for fresh eating. I like lychees in cocktails best, lol.

We have rambutans here too......they look great on a fruit platter for something different.....I prefer lychees though.

Carambola or star fruit are another good one for show......

I miss the tropical fruit salads we enjoyed in Trinidad. It took my mother some time to prepare everything, but it was worth it. :)

What kind of fruits did you get in Trinidad?

I don't know much about the place, but I'm guessing that the food is tasty there because of the mix of cultures.
