Gardening!

Ever since you started posting pictures of your garden I've been curious about that small building in the back corner. It almost looks like a child's playhouse.

It's our summerhouse. I built it from a kit, and built the decking.

The area is very shady and nothing really grew well there - hence the project. Unfortunately birds have taken to roosting and nesting over the area which renders it unusable these days. However, we enjoyed te decking for the first 3 or 4 years before the "fowl" problems commenced!

I suppose it was the deposits from above that were the problem.;) All you need is a transparent roof to intercept the problem.:)

or hang a big school bell with a pull string.I chased an early A.M. Woodpecker of of a close by tree that way and didn't even have to get out of bed.I threaded the string inside through an open window and yanked it when it started up at 5.He cleared out very quickly.

Love your photos of the tulips, we can't grow them here in Central Florida because they need a long chilling period. We can grow in pots or plant if the bulbs are chilled but they will not ever bloom again.

Would digging up the bulbs in the fall and put them in the fridge for the winter get them to bloom again?

No I'm afraid not. Even when you chill them at home you have to have a separate refrigerator because gases from fruits and vegetables affects them. You need 12- 14 weeks of chilling. Chilling and then forcing bloom pretty much spends all the bulbs energy. In a normal climate they regain the strength back over the seasons and are ready to bloom again in the Spring. I'll sometimes get some paper whites to bloom again as they are found in the South and need less chill time. I just get some pre -chilled bulbs then let them bloom and toss them. I am waiting for a patch of rain lilies to bloom soon out in the garden as soon as the rainy season starts which may be this week. They are bulbs too. I'll post a picture as soon as they pop out.

Really.....I saw that on the News tonight....I'll have to go have a gander!

Thanks!

Edit......how wonderful were all the gardens.....how hard that must be to judge.
I'd love to walk through all of the gardens!

Our favourite garden centre. We were there at the end of last week.

Their restaurant is brilliant. Coffee and a sandwich or cake are essential refreshments each time we go to the GC. :)

I love looking at everyone's pictures and hearing about all the gardens. You all have such neat gardens I am in awe. It took me days just to clean up and mulch a little square by the house. I just don't look at what else there is to do while I'm working. When I walk through the yard I will work on whatever I see and forget about what I was doing. Fortunately it is a joy even if its never near finished.

It's also my favourite time of the year. Planning what to grow. Seeing what survived and is now flowering. Yup! I love my garden
