iOS5 and messaging between iPhone4 and iPad 2

My girlfriend uses the iPad 2 during the day and I have my iPhone 4. I use the same apple id on both devices, but have different email addresses. When I try to send a message from the iPad to the iPhone I get an error. Do I need to different apple ids for each device?

Also, when I go to General > Setting > Messages and try to change the email from mine to hers I get an error from iMessage Activation saying Unable to verify email because it is already in use.

When sending to the iPhone from the Pad, use the iPhone's number.

In the iMessage settings on the iPhone, make sure your girlfriends email address in not listed. Make sure it is listed in the settings on the iPad.

That's what it took to make my iPhone and iPad talk nicely. It may or may not work for you. Good luck.

My email address is showing up as the email for both devices. I am not able to delete my email address from the iPad (grayed out). I try the option to add another email address (my girl friends), when it tries to activate it I get this message.

iMessage Activation

Unable to verify email because it is already in use.

Any help would be appreciated.

I don't really know. Is her email account entered on the iPad. That might be necessary, and undesirable.

Try sending the to the phone number from the iPad, and to your email address from the phone. When I do this it gets a bit weird, because both answer and reply tend to end up on the same side of the conversation.
