What's new

Personal Cloud Storage

For those who may be interested I have just set up my own 1TB personal cloud storage. How easy was it, almost to easy!

So I purchased a Western Digital 1TB My Book Live yesterday on Amazon for £99.99 which was delivered an hour ago. I plugged this into by BT HomeHub router with the supplied patch cable. I then loaded the supplied WD software on my MacBook Air and as soon as it was loaded it asked for a few details and found my new drive immediately.

I then spent about 15mins setting it up how I wanted it and upgrading it to the latest firmware. It then rebooted.

I then generated an access code for my iPad which was entered into the WD 2go Pro App (£1.99 from the App Store although there is a free version).

I now have complete access from both my iPad and my MacBook Air.

I'll now play around with it for a while but so far, really pleased with this and all for just a little over £100.

So if you had the Apple TV thing and your My Book connected, do you suppose you could watch the movies on your TV?

If you mean stream from the My Book to the iPad and simultaneously stream from the iPad to the TV.......I think that it's unlikely but I will try it out later today and let you know, if it works the that will be a bonus!

EDIT: The more I think about this the more I don't understand why I said that it is unlikely. Anyway, I'll test it later.

If I can get by the technology learning curve, I'd like to have the hard drive connected to my router with all my movies stored on the drive. Further to that I have cataloged each movie on to a database manager called EMDB which is free to use but if you donate a small amount they will send you a code to rename the program to what ever you like. This is a Windows program.

Anyway, this program not only catalogs each movie but it automatically looks up tons of details about each movie from IMDB and....... if you so choose it can play any selected movie from your movie database assuming you have that movie in on your drive. This is what it looks like:

Wow, that is interesting. I am waiting for my WD TV Live to be delivered, it too will read my drives and catalogue my movies but no need for the computer to be on, which was a key decision for me in going down this route.

It's my turn to ask for assistance here. I have set up my CloudFTP as per this thread http://www.ipadforums.net/ipad-accessories/75570-cloudftp.html and I'm part way through the review/guide for it but I've run into a brick wall. I have connected GoodReader and it sees the CloudFTP and I can even download files straight into the app but when I try to upload from GoodReader to CloudFTP I get an error 553. I have done some googling and discovered that its an FTP error but if I have a weakness (I actually have many) then FTP is definitely at the top of my list.

So, if anyone can assist I would be grateful, I am connecting using ad-hoc mode and most of my settings can be seen on the CloudFTP thread?

I've done this sort of thing....stream from a pc upstairs to the iPad and then from the iPad to the ATV.... All depends on the quality of your wireless connection.

Interestingly, another part of this project is to turn off the wireless on my BT Home Hub and use the Apple Time Capsule to create a wireless network instead. I understand that it should be even better than it is......and it seems pretty good at the moment!

I have moved this thread to the new iPad Connect section of these forums as it seems better placed here!

Thanks for that a perfect location for this thread...... I find it is exciting that we now have so many solutions that work with the iPad... But in saying that we need to make the set up easy for every one... Hopefully this new forum will provide those solutions so any one can have confidence when they purchase a home hub or NAS system they can be sure it will provide what they need to make it happen seamlessly.

I think I said somewhere else in this thread that there is so much available for the iPad in relation to NAS, clouds, home entertainment, etc and that it is so easy to set up and use that more folks should look into it.

It does seem like a minefield of geekness and technofear at first glance but the truth is that almost everything is plug and play these days so hopefully these threads and this section will help everyone out. I'm really enjoying setting my new systems up and it gives me a whole new level of enjoyment from my iPad and home entertainment kit!

Watch out for the new WD TV thread coming to a sub forum near you soon!

When will the iPad connect section be visible in the app version of the iPad forum?
