SweetPoison's JB Venture!

Hey guys ~

What does it mean when it says "this package has been assigned?"

Do you mean "signed"?

"If you're on one of the newer idevices Apple is restricting what firmware you can install on it by only allowing firmware that they've "signed". Saurik set up a system that keeps the keys that you need to sign the firmware cached so that they're available even after Apple has decided to stop signing a specific version of the firmware. This will allow you to downgrade your firmware (With a few jumps through hoops I assume) even after Apple has said you're not allowed to use the version you're downgrading to. Using Cydia on the newer devices send the request to Saurik's server to get the keys from Apple for your device and then stores them for future use. So if you have one of the newer devices and you've been using Cydia then your keys are most likely already cached (it says what versions the server has cached when you open the main Cydia page, at the top, in greenish writing)"

Yes yes! I think it is "signed". Oh, Lord. I have no clue what you are saying up there....

scratch that, Saurik has posted a precise article here... see Step 5

How to Host a Cydia™ Repository - Jay Freeman (saurik)

Marie, bottom line is you don't need to worry about it. You won't get anything bad through Cydia with the default repositories, and it is just a way to prove that the package comes from who it says it comes from.

Okay ~ I won't worry. I wasn't worried, actually. I just am in such a Twilight Zone when I go into Cydia. I want to know what every single thing means.

And then when I pull down that little menu, Leigh, the one you swipe, uptop, I think it is SB thingy ~

I want to play around in there but there isn't much to do....

Actually, those are two completely different things. Outlaw is describing how Cydia handles SHSH blobs, but the signed packages SweetPoison was asking about are Cydia apps.

Essentially what it means when a package is signed, is that you, the user can trust that the package, I.e. app is getting downloaded from the owner. So you know that it is the original package and not someone trying to fool you into downloading a modified app.

Moving on to something I can wrap my brain around ( I will come back to the "signed package" thingy as I do have more questions.

My ipad is about to completely die. If it does I will lose my JB. So...should I let that happened, then update, and re jailbreak.

Or...hell ~ I have no clue, actually!:o

When you say die Marie, I assume you mean run out of battery?

As you know, you are running a tethered jailbreak. That means you are going to have to use redsn0w to boot it tethered if you want to switch it on again. If you can get it to a wall charger, I would do that now. Even if you intend to upgrade, you will need to do an iTunes backup so it will need to be booted... And you should never upgrade an iPad which has a very low battery. You need to charge it anyway.

You could if you like follow my upgrade process (in my sig) BUT there is no need for you to use pkgbackup, so you can just ignore all those steps related to that. Do the rest through. That will get you from 4.3 to 4.3.2 jailbroken and untethered (it doesn't matter you are not on 4.3.1, the process is just the same)

When your iPad dies, you bin it.

If however, the battery runs low and it turns off, you connect it via USB to your computer, fire up redsn0w and select 'boot tethered now' to make the iPad boot jailbroken once again.

You could also update and than rejailbreak, but that takes a little longer.

Or, how about charge it first. Most computers don't charge iPad. And why boot tethered with a dead battery? I would update to 4.3.2.

We must speak Marie here. :D

After I charge it ~ I then update? Then fire up redsn0w?

Okay ~ I will do that now, while I am out. Then I will follow your steps, Leigh.

Don't forget me guys, okay?

Always here for you sweetheart...

Well... Charge it no matter what. But, if you want to update to 4.3.2 then do it when your iPad gets some more charge. It doesn't have to be full. Or, if you don't want to update, then plug into your computer and fire up redsnow. (I would recommend updating)

On another note... Nobody has said anything about my avatar. You guys must not like it..... :(
