What's new

The "Anything Goes" thread

Yesterday, I paid in a couple of cheques into my account at the building society.

I used a new facility whereby each cheque can be fed into an OCR reader in the cash machine.

The machine shows a view of the item and asks you to confirm the amount. Then I was given a receipt with a legible thumbnail of the cheque. You repeat the process for each item being paid in. It's a very very neat system :)

Has anyone else used such a system?

Our Bank of America ATM has had this for more than a year. I've used it once or twice. It has an funds immediately available limit of $300. Amounts over that require two to three days to clear. I can do the same thing via my BofA app on the iPhone/iPad. Take a picture of the front and back of the check to deposit it. Same limits.

Do any of you follow the Canadian curling competitions? A distant cousin, Geoff Walker, is in the Brad Gushue team Taking on Kevin Martin at the National grandslam of curling quarter-finals at Port Hawksbury, Nova Scotia. The clash was on Saturday and televised.

Yes I do.
I gained considerable respect for the sport when I worked with a gent who called the matches for network television. He made watching the play exciting and helped me understand exactly what was going on.

Last week, we watched a piece on TV related to curling. It was a visit to the Scottish manufacturer of curling stones. It was interesting.

I'm afraid my memory of trying the sport was pretty painful! I slipped up. Who hasn't? ;)

Richard, there is a sign at the southern end of the Pembury bypass (A21) directing to a curling rink. It's not a million miles from you although I've no idea if it is still open or not but the sign is still there.

I think I remember seeing that sign many many many years ago Gabe. I must investigate. :)

I was just hearing a discussion on the radio that Blackberry is pushing out a new model and it could be their last release as time could be up Blackberry.

What amused me was that three people in the studio were comparing makes of phone they owned. Each one stated the make - okay. Then the last one said, "I have an iPhone 5" and a cheer went up. :)

The rollout of the Blackberry 10 operating system and two touchscreen smart phones is taking place with great fanfare in Canada and the U.S.
Again, the talking heads are attempting to predict the result and as usual if they're right either way, it's in large part because they had a good guess.

I hope RIM succeeds in this. Competition is healthy.

Most interesting take-aways from BB10 launch.
- no home button on Z10 touchscreen
- physical keyboard model called Q10
- company name change to BlackBerry from RIM.

The green and red dots beside the avatars indicate whether the member is online or not.
