The "Useless Information" Thread

Not sure if that is true. Forgive me, but I think you have it wrong. No, I know you are wrong. Definitely not correct.

The old problem had something to do with not being able to fold a piece of paper so many times rather than how thick it becomes after each fold. As the thickness grows it becomes harder to fold and eventually, it becomes impossible to fold the paper again. Regardless of how big the paper is.

You could take measurements and do the math and determine if it is true or not. For example, determine how small the paper is after each fold. Then cut up a piece of paper and stack the pieces and see if they reach the sun. You wil loose some surface area due to the ever increasing thickness of those folds, so take that into account.

The formula is N=4.546 (P) x 4 +ra * Distance to the sun (represented by 4 x 10 x 100 xP ie R squared) x r +n 12th sq X 3.445/a+B+N sub Variable x brand of paper + thickness +4 x color

A 12 x 12 paper folded gets you a 6 x 12 page. Try it now, grap a sheet. Fold that and you end up with a 3 x 6, so on and on. There must be a math wiz who can report how small the surface area is after 51 folds. Then add up each piece of paper and see if the pile is 92,960,000 miles high.

I feel confident saying you are mistaken.

The old problem had something to do with not being able to fold....
I'm sure that's right and I did say "if you could fold...."
A 12 x 12 paper folded....grab a sheet...
Never said it had to be that small. But of course, if it was as big as from say here to the moon, you would be right about the practical (not theoretical) problem of "not being able to fold"
So I guess it would boil down to the mathematicians doing their thing. (And your formula is most impressive, not that I understand any of it:o)
In light of your confidence, I am prepared to concede I may be "Definitely not correct" but I hesitate to say that I am wrong:D
Regards, Andrew

Doesn't terminal velocity apply to free falling throughout the atmosphere? Down there, it is solid rocks and lava and that giant spinning ball of iron or perhaps it is melted iron.

I take my clues to those gals that wrestle in jello. They can wrestle faster in the air, but the jello slows their actions. So, they would not only be crushed on their way through the planet, but their movement would be slow. if you were on a giant ball of rock with a Jello core and two wrestlers were wrestling throughout their journey through earth, they would be slowed down as they pass throughout the various time zones. So they might never arrive in the first place. Or they would be really late.

I say you cant drill a hole through the earth because the earth is spinning and when you drill and the bit breaks through the other side, the rotation of the earth might mean that the drill stabs you in the behind. Do the math, I must be correct.
I rather enjoyed this post, Bob. I used to like jello in my younger days!:p

LOL . . . one of the last usnet groups I played with ended in a great battle over Cellulose Nitrate and Cellulose Acetate and a few pen makers. Can you believe it? I really cheesed their pizza, so I feel good about that.

Given enough time and every discussion ends with anger and someone will be called Hitler. I never take your tone as anything other than pleasant. OK, you are usually wrong (:o) (:p) (:o) but you make that look good. Santa will not put coal in your stocking, trust me.
I've rather enjoyed this thread. If anything, it has brought out two opposing schools of thought; the theorists and the practicalists:)
