The "Useless Information" Thread

The heart rate of a blue-throated hummingbird was measured at 1,260 beats per minute while it was hovering.

But there are no accurate lists available. According to our president, there are 57 states in the United States of America. 57.

I'll tell you, I am truly bothered.

When you look at a map--any map--you might ask yourself, where are those missing states

Geez, you are bothered? I am asking myself that. Not counting the federal Australian Capital Territory (containing our capital city, Canberra), I count we have seven states, including the Northern Territory.
Can you just ask your president what he had in mind about that extra seven?

Daylight savings time doesn't save any daylight. The day is just as long as without it. The hours are simply re-numbered.

Do you mean to say that all these years when I have been hating daylight saving because I thought it fades the curtains, I have been wrong? Any way I'm not the only one. I understand there have been some members of the Hells Angels motor cycle club around my way who were worrying that it fades their tatts.

Exactly. This is, after all, the useless information thread.;)

Oh, you get the hang of that, after awhile. It's the counting of 21 beats per second that takes real talent!

In reality, I believe a recording of the heartbeat was analyzed on a computer. I'm a licensed hummingbird bander (ringer) and conduct public demonstrations where freshly-banded hummers are placed in childrens' hands to be released. The buzz of the bird's heartbeat in the palm leaves each kid with an indelible memory that I hope will form a lifelong bond to nature.

Gilligan of Gilligan's Island had a first name that was only used once, on the never-aired pilot show. His first name was Willy.

If all the gold ever mined in all of human history were formed into a solid cube, it would measure only 20.4m on a side.

I think it would be much larger than that. I'm sure there is a difference between how much was actually mined in all of human history and how much has been documented. How do we know exactly how much was mined by the Mayans? Or the Egyptians? I'm sure those numbers are different from the amount that has been found.

So they're trying to tell us that there has never been an instance in all of human history where someone has mined gold that we don't know about? I find that difficult to believe. Are they also taking into account the gold trinkets from previous civilizations that we haven't found yet? Where is the list of every human being that has ever pulled gold out of the ground, including how much gold was obtained?

That article actually contradicts itself. First it says gold has been mined from BEFORE recorded history, then they assume to know exactly how large a cube could be formed from all of the gold that has ever been mined. How do they know how much was mined before recorded history?

This is one reason I don't like Wikipedia, anyone can edit an article to include any "facts" they want.

But, this is just my opinion.
