The "Useless Information" Thread

So they're trying to tell us that there has never been an instance in all of human history where someone has mined gold that we don't know about? I find that difficult to believe. Are they also taking into account the gold trinkets from previous civilizations that we haven't found yet?

That article actually contradicts itself. First it says gold has been mined from BEFORE recorded history, then they assume to know exactly how large a cube could be formed from all of the gold that has ever been mined. How do they know how much was mined before recorded history?

This is one reason I don't like Wikipedia, anyone can edit an article to include any "facts" they want.

But, this is just my opinion.

I didn't just look at Wikipedia, here's one of the other sites I looked at. It's estimate of the cube size is slightly smaller than the Wikipedia estimate.

It takes about 50 times more energy to produce a no rechargeable battery, such as a AA cell, than it delivers while in service.

The Les Nessman character on the TV series WKRP in Cincinnati wore a band-aid in every episode. Either on himself, his glasses, or his clothing.

Where are they getting their facts? That article states:

"Million - the number of times that all of the existing gold in the world, turned into 5 micron wire, could wrap around the planet."

So they've been able to account for every ounce of gold that has ever existed on planet Earth? How is that possible?

Don't get me wrong, sci, you're cool, it's just that any article that assumes to know exactly what happened before recorded history doesn't have much credibility. The phrase "before recorded history" implies that we don't exactly know what happened.

Forgive me, I've studied law and am accustomed to picking things apart to find the facts. I'll shut up now :)

The term "the whole 9 yards" came from W.W.II fighter pilots in the South Pacific. When arming their airplanes on the ground, the .50 caliber machine gun ammo belts measured exactly 27 feet, before being loaded into the fuselage. If the pilots fired all their ammo at a target, it got "the whole 9 yards."

I think annually only 30 tons or less is probably produced by mining giants, BHP put out just over 5 tons their last reported year and Rio Tinto produced 13 tons. The Wiki article talks about more than 150000 tons so any gold not recognized due to pre-historied civilizations probably doesn't make a noticeable dent/impact on the total. Just my thoughts

The slogan on New Hampshire license plates is " Live Free or Die." Inmates of the state prison in Concord make the plates.

56 years on the clock and I'm still in service and fully charged.

Right! If you're allergic to peanuts, don't stand too near the dynamite when it explodes. The allergic reaction is deadly.:D
