When you press the Home button twice (quickly) a bar of icons should appear at the bottom of the screen. This is called the multitask bar. It contains a list of app opened recently, the most recent first. This is what you swipe to the right (drag finger left to right) to get to volume and other controls.

If you are pressing the home button two slowly you will only go tot he Home screen (if exiting an app) or go to the Search screen. Swiping the Home screen tot he right also gets you to the Search screen. That's probably what you are seeing, since the keyboard comes up automatically on that screen; so you can enter a search term.

If you are not seeing the multitask bar (no matter how you click the home button) you are probably running an older version of iOS, really old. The multitask bar started with iOS 4.x. Check under Settings > General > About > Version to see what iOS you are running.

You can add a shortcut for your name to use in your email by going to Settings>General>Keyboard> Add New Shortcut. I have 3 different shortcuts for the 3 ways I identify myself: to students, coworkers and family.

I also use the shortcut function to add new words to the iPad's dictionary. This also gets rid of the annoying red underlining for unrecognized words.

I use shortcuts for Sent from my iPad using iPF.net and Sent from my iPad using iPF . :)
Now, it would be handy if there were a shortcut for the current:
-date
+
-time.
iOS 7.0?

Favorite App (this week) for both iPad and iPhone is Genius Scan+. You can shoot pics of a document, it has enhancement, then you can save/email them as PDFs or .doc files. Oh, it also allows for multi-page collections (pics) to be compiled as a single document. Soooooo handy!

Hello KD.

Regarding the app you described.
Do you mean that if I took a pic of some printed text, (say from a newspaper) I could sent it as a doc file that can be edited?

This sounds interesting and quite useful. I'll have to look into this, thanks!

Where do you get genius scan? It sounds useful, and might enable me to print docs which are saved as pics or PDF files.

It shows up if you search for it in the App Store, but you need to look at the iPhone apps. It is free, but there does not appear to be an iPad version. It will probably work on the iPad, but not look so nice.

Scanner Pro does pretty much the same thing, is an excellent app, and is universal. It costs $6.99, but works on both the iPhone and iPad for that price. And the UI is much nicer on the iPad than using an iPhone app.

Hello Donka.

Big thanks, I have installed it.
Looks promising!

Your welcome. You need to wait for the email with the text but it works well.
