TUTORIAL - Failsafe method to restore the current version of IOS

Help Ipad 2 previously jail broken tried to update and now stuck in the middle. When I try to restore I get either unknown error 36 or 6. Have tried about 10 times and no luck.

Thanks

Have you tried the tutorial in the first post of this thread? If you follow all the steps exactly, you should end up with a functioning iPad on the current version of iOS.

Yes have followed the steps multiple times. I was getting a few of the most common errors but have since solved those problems just always end up with a error 6 or 36 at the end of the restore cycle.

FYI, took it to the genius bar yesterday, they thought it might be hardware related and offered me a trade in. Guess that might be my best option

If you follow every step of the tutorial, without modifying a single step in any way, you should not be getting these errors.

Are you running any kind of anti-virus software on your computer? If so, disable it while attempting the tutorial.

An error 6 or 36 often points to something on your PC not playing nice. As sci-fan said, anti-virus etc. needs to be turned off. Be as agressive as you can. i.e quit every task you can possibly quit on your PC before trying it again.

hei guys goodevening, please i have some question about this thread, so i have an i pad2 with jailbreak 5.1.1 then i want to restore it, don't need to make a backup, is possible thet remain 1GB space occuped from something coming from cydia when i do the restore to the actual firmw.? thank you all

In the end, I took it to 4 different Computer shops that specialize in Jailbreaks here in Asia. All were unable to fix it and think it was a hardware issue. Makes no sense but the apple store said the same thing and swapped it out after a payment from myself.

Thanks everyone for the help

good evening guys...about my question, nobody can say to me if there is the possibility that i can loose 1 GB of space in my ipad2 performing the restore:(

I have to finally admit I need help, after 2 days of trying I am at a loss. Although an Apple noob I have worked in IT security for 20 years so know my way round Microsoft but not Apple.
I have a 14 month old Ipad2 with wifi & GSM and apart from buying apps i have not interfered with the Ipad at all. I received notification to upgrade to IOS6.1.2 and duly connected to my wifi and hit upgrade, after a while I noticed that all that was on the screen was the 'connect to itunes' logo, after research I installed the latest version of itunes on my new PC and connected the Ipad. Itunes recognized i was in recovery mode and downloaded the ipsw (i presume) file and verified with apple and then gave an error 21, even though my AV was disabled. (Kaspersky) I uninstalled Kaspersky and got the same error (Windows firewall switched off) I have tried various things such as this tutorial and using TU & redsn0w but as i am a noob I did not want to do too much in case I did more harm than good. I have uninstalled itunes and other apple services in the correct order and reinstalled, I have tried 2 usb cables although itunes say ipad is in recovery mode so i assume the cables are OK and one works with my ipod classic so must be OK? I hope?
I downloaded another ipsw file through Chrome (iPad2,2_6.1_10B141_Restore[is this the right one for my ipad?]) and tried to recover using this through itunes, this now gives an error 3194. I have removed any entries from the host file and still no joy. Now it seems i cannot enter DFU mode anymore, i follow the DFU for dummies and each time the ipad bounces back to the apple logo which then goes to the itunes logo and cable screen and i am timing this using my PC clock so timing is spot on.
I am not really interested in jailbreaking or hacking my ipad all i want is it to work.
I have followed the tutorial diligently and maybe I am missing something? BTW i have tried on another machine (Vista laptop) with the same error 21 ( tried nothing further on the other machine). Itunes tells me the ipad is in recovery mode whether in DFU state or not
I notice through apples forums a lot of people having trouble with this IOS6.1.2 upgrade.
ANY help appreciated, I would not mind but ipod is playing up as well...grrr!!

bombolo, surely you must be aware that this is an international forum with many members in many time zones. While you are posting, many members may well be asleep and not in a position to attend to your problem. Please have some patience. But not only that, you are contravening the rules of this forum which we ask you to look at, particularly Rule 4.3.

If you do a restore to the current iOS you will end up with the files downloaded from Cydia no longer on your iPad. The steps provided in this thread will wipe the memory and operating system then load the new iOS. Then you will have to restore from backup in iTunes if you want to reinstall the files from the App Store. It will no any of the jailbreak software or file from Cydia on it until you jailbreak again.

As i've said in one of my topics on this forum, restoring your iOS device isn't (UNFORTUNATELY!) as simple and as straight-forward as just plugging in and following the basic instructions. It REALLY rarely works on the first try! In my experience with all my iDevices, restoring has NEVER worked on the first try. You always have to keep at it, sometimes for over an hour before you finally get the device restored via iTunes. It has to do with glitches in iTunes, as i seriously doubt that any iDevice would show any instability when in DFU mode. If you get any kind of error while restoring in iTunes (it's the only application that you can use to do your restore), just unplug the device or close iTunes and re-open, or both!! Keep trying until the black screen of your device in DFU mode, suddenly lights up with the apple logo and the progress bar appears! When it does, iTunes will show further information about the restoration. Now, you can celebrate with a Harlem Shake!

Although i am aware that jailbreaking is not allowed to be discussed, i believe i am allowed to say that for those of you who jailbroke your devices and ended up having to restore due to the device being unresponsive and permanently showing the apple logo, then you should SERIOUSLY reconsider installing any Cydia apps, as most of them are poorly coded and not always updated to work perfectly with the latest iOS version on your iDevice. I have tried and done almost everything (i like to explore the possibilities of my devices) and from solid experience, i can say that you should stick to the official iOS apps. If your devices crashed due to poorly coded Cydia apps, you will most likely never be able to recover any data on your iDevice, and will be forced to restore back to original factory settings. Also, if you do a restore, you will obviously lose all jailbreak functionalities on your iDevice and will have to jailbreak again.

I'm not sure what propmpted you to post this here in this thread, but there are several things which I believe need to be challenged...

1) You are posting this in a tutorial hosted within the Hacking Section of iPadForums. This section is dedicated to the discussion of Jailbreaking, and therefore it is completely wrong to suggest that jailbreaking is not allowed to be discussed. It is the reason this section exists and we warmly welcome and support jailbreakers here. Please can I ask that you check your facts before making statements about the forum policies like this. Thank-you.

2) I am sorry to hear the you have never sucessfully been able to restore any of your devices on the first try. IMHO, that says more about your knowledge and skills in relation to your own configuration of your PC, iTunes, and devices, than it does about a general issue that everyone experiences. I beleive this was clearly evidenced in a previous post from you, where the solution to your problems was seemingly entirely related to your PC and nothing to do with the device itself. People certainly do experience problems from time to time (as I point out in the first post), and that's the reason this guide was written, but you are doing something wrong if it never succeeds first time. To counter balance your view, I don't believe I have had a failed restoration since IOS 5.0.1 was first released. Whilst neither your nor my experience will be typical, the truth will lie somewhere in between.

3) I cannot agree with the statement that "most Cydia apps are poorly coded", and that this could result in people "never being able to recover any of the data on their device". The only situation I have come across which would result in data loss related to jailbreaking in recent times is where folks have installed ILLEGAL siri hacks onto their devices. In 5 years of jailbreaking I have never once lost data due to a Cydia tweak which was not compatible with my device. Safe Mode exists (and has been enhanced considerably over the years) for precisely this reason, so that you can easily recover from any issue of incompatibility. We even have a guide on its use in this very section. Folks that do genuinely lose data tend to do so because they fail to take any kind of precautions, such as taking periodic backups.

You profess to have "tried and done almost everything" with your device, but the evidence above would suggest to me that you have failed to learn many of the basics along the way which would have prevented you having such a negative experience. I hope that, rather than being so entirely negaive about the subject, you can research it in better detail, both here and elsewhere and gain the knowledge to have a much more positive experience.

UPDATE:
Just to round off my issues, I have sent the Ipad to Apple who could not fix the issues and even though my Ipad was out of warranty (by 2 months) they have kindly issued me with a new Ipad. Therefore it appears that my issue was probably hardware related(?) and my only dilemma is do i stick with the Ipad? If the Nexus 10 had 3G i would be seriously tempted to move.
