TUTORIAL - Failsafe method to restore the current version of IOS

I am. I tried using tiny umbrella but the option is greyed out and I'm not to familiar with editing Hosts.

The hosts file is just a text file without a file extension. Instead of hosts.txt or hosts.doc it is just hosts. You can edit it by going to the directory where it is saved and double click on it. There should be a window that comes up asking what program you want to open this file with. Choose Notepad. Delete, or comment out any line pertaining to apple. Usually there are some comments and one line describing home as 127.0.0.1.
127.0.0.1 localhosts #loopback
Anything after the # symbol is considered a comment. To have the whole line become a comment put the # symbol at the front of the line.
If you have a line in your hosts file such as:
192.168.10.45 gs.apple.com
It doesn't matter what the numbers in the kine are. i just made some up for this example. Either delete the line or put a # symbol at the front of the line.
#192.168.10.45 gs.apple.com

When you are finished with the hosts file save it Click File, then Save.

You should be good to go with the restore. :-)

I tried saving the notepad file but windows is saying that I must contact an administrator to get permission but I don't have an administrator on my computer. Also, do i replace the original hosts file or just put the new edited hosts file in the same area?

Run Notepad as an administrator (right click and run as an admin and such). Then click Open in Notepad, and navigate to the host file and open it up. Delete the gs.apple.com lines, and just save the host file (crtl + s). Close it out, then go to the Host file's directory and delete the Host.umbrella file if it's there. Make sure that iTunes is closed when doing this. After editing the Host file and deleting the Host.umbrella, flush your DNS. Go to Start > Run > CMD, and type in "ipconfig /flushdns" and press enter

Hurray! Glad everyone was able to help and that you've got your iPad how you want it.

And, thanks for coming back to tell us of your success. We always like to hear back - especially when it works! :)

Guess someone should add that portion onto the first post as well, that if you're having privilege problems, run Notepad or your editor as an admin, and browse to your host file manually.

Hi
I've spent the best part of 6 hrs following this tutorial incl the editing of the host file etc and i am still getting error 3014. I am at my wits end with this.
Please can somebody help?

On step 2, starting TU, does the ipad need to be plugged in and does iTunes need to be running?

Hi,
iTunes does not need to be running. The iPad needs to be plugged into the computer.
You might try disabling your firewall and antivirus program while you are doing the restore, unless you already have.
Another thing to try is to plug into a different USB port. It is sort of hard guessing what operating system you have and if it is a laptop or a desktop. If it is a desktop, try one of the USB ports on the back of the computer.
By the way, I'm sorry that you are having trouble. Within the last couple of weeks I followed the instructions for three iPads and three iPhones. I didn't have a hitch this time. Quite a while back I kept getting errors and read about the antivirus. Once I disabled that ( until next reboot ) the update went flawlessly. As soon as I was done with the iOS update I made sure to re-enable the antivirus program.
Good luck!

If you have successfully modified your hosts file by removing all references to gs.apple.com from it, and you are still getting a 3194 error, then you are not trying to restore the latest firmware for your device. You must restore 6.1.2 (at time of writing) since that is the latest and only firmware Apple is signing for your device.

In step 2 the iPad does NOT need to be plugged in. All you need to do is run TU and follow the instructions given. IF you are having problems with that part, then manually edit the hosts file and remove the references to gs.apple.com.

If you are on Windows, make sure you use Notepad to edit the file and you must run Notepad with Administrator privileges.

Please note that recent posts in this thread may now be out of date with the release of IOS 6.1.3 this afternoon - That is now the current version of IOS, and should be used in this guide until such time as a newer version is released... ;)

when I try it says it will verify the restore with apple, then it extracts the software and comes back with a message that says "The iPad "iPad" could not be restored. The device isnt eligable for the requested build." Help please

What iOS are you trying to restore? The signing window for iOS 6.1.2 has been closed by Apple. Now, the most current software is iOS 6.1.3. That is the only iOS you can upgrade to using this tutorial.
