TUTORIAL - Failsafe method to restore the current version of IOS

hi, my problem is i can't restore to factory settings following the above advice to the letter. itunes get error 6!! i have no backup on itunes (i have pkgbackup on dropbox). i don't remember my firmware, it's somewhere around 5. it's a new ipad that was jailbroken overseas about 8 month ago.
i'll appreciate any help.

According to Apple, "error 6" usually relates to having third party security software running. All I can recommend is turning off any antivirus, antispam and/or firewall software you have running on your computer and then try this tutorial again.

Yes, you will end up on iOS 6.1.3, and will have to wait for the next jailbreak.

I have tried this process with jailbroken Ipad 3 and cannot get it to recognize the firmware when I shift-restore in iTunes. I am attempting to use the firmware from the page you referenced. I have a WiFi only iPad so I am downloading firmware from the top of the list for Ipad 3 WiFi only. Is this the wrong file? Can I use an older OS? Thanks.

If it's not working, then you're not following all the steps exactly as written. You can't download older firmware, the process will install the latest iOS version automatically as part of the procedure. In this case, that will be iOS 6.1.3. The procedure will remove your jailbreak, any attempt to preserve your jailbreak, like trying to use an older jailbreakable firmware, will cause the procedure to fail.

I just want to reset the ipad. I don't care if I lose the jailbreak. I have followed all steps exactly as written. I was confused on something though. If I run TinyUmbrella, do I still have to look for the host file? I could not find any host file at the listed location.

Step #2 tells you how to handle the host file. Have you disabled any firewalls and anti-virus programs you may have on your computer? This procedure won't work properly if they are running.

I have disabled everything. I am in the process of running windows update to complete updates to my computer. I think I saw something somewhere stating that this should be done before a restore.
I did find the host file, but according to another thread, there is nothing wrong with mine.
