TUTORIAL - Failsafe method to restore the current version of IOS

I have disabled everything. I am in the process of running windows update to complete updates to my computer. I think I saw something somewhere stating that this should be done before a restore.
I did find the host file, but according to another thread, there is nothing wrong with mine.

I think you may have discovered your problem. Wait until all your updating is finished before trying the tutorial again.

Unfortunately, no. After turning everything off, updating my computer, and attempting to shift-restore, I still get the same message. "This firmware version is not compatible with the ipad."

You probably downloaded the wrong IPSW for your iPad3. At he top of the firmware list is the IPSWs for an iPad 4, so make sure you scroll down and get the one for a WiFi-only iPad 3 (iOS 6.1.3).

Cause that message is iTunes telling you that you don't have the correct iOS for your iPad...

I bought the iPad used and, being new to apple products, was told it was a 3. Actually, after a bit of research, it is a Ipad2! Firmware is definitely not compatible! Restored perfectly fine with proper version. Thanks for the help.

Glad you got it sorted in the end.

If it's not working, then you're not following all the steps exactly as written. You can't download older firmware, the process will install the latest iOS version automatically as part of the procedure. In this case, that will be iOS 6.1.3. The procedure will remove your jailbreak, any attempt to preserve your jailbreak, like trying to use an older jailbreakable firmware, will cause the procedure to fail.
Can you confirm that this is for all cases, meaning a restore must always be done to the latest firmware ie. as of today 1-April-2013, to be 6.1.3 regardless of the current firmware (6.1.2 and below) thereby removing jailbreak until further notice?

A little confusing. If you're asking whether or not the device must be on the latest iOS, no, it's user preference. You can upgrade if you want, it's not mandatory.

But if you're asking if restoring will always be the latest iOS that's currently being distributed, then it's situational. On pre-A5 devices, you can restore to any iOS you want assuming you have SHSH blobs. This, unfortunately, is not the case for the 4S and 5, and the iPad 2, 3, 4 and Mini. The iPad 3 unfortunately, cannot be restored to anything outside of iOS 6.1.3 unless your device is on iOS 5, in which case, you can use the re-restore feature if you have iOS 5 blobs.

I'm beginning to catch the drift. I am talking about restoring. I'm using the Mini which I now understand must always be restored to the newest version regardless of the existing firmware, which will currently lose me the jailbreak due to it not being available for 6.1.3. Hmm, bummer.

Restoring will always wipe your device. It doesn't automatically backup your data so make sure you backup your data prior to restoring. But it's advisable to backup your data every so often just in case since you can never be too safe, especially, if data is constantly being added or changed on your device, like with photos, contacts, etc.

I can not restore my ipad 3 iOS version 5.1.1 with absynthe jailbreak.I downloaded evasion jailbreak 6.1.2 and the IPSW file but i get always the 3194 error.
I changed my host file that nothing blocks apple.gs and the problem still exists.
willerz2 you mentioned that ipad 3 cannot be restored because apple will not anymore sign this iOS version?Should i wait for a new jailbreak and new iOS?
I saw in youtube that i can backup my ipad via itunes and when im restoring from backup then the jailbreak is gone. Not in my case.I can not unjailbreak my ipad.Actually i'm only trying to update to version 6.1.2 with jailbreak and i cant.
Any help would be appreciated.

Unfortunately you simply cannot do what you are trying to do. An iPad3 cannot be restored to anything but 6.1.3 today, regardless of whether you have saved blobs or not.

The only thing you can do is wait for a new jailbreak to be released for a version of IOS you can restore to, but that may be a very long wait :(

No, the answer I gave two posts prior to your one applies to you too. Sorry :(

So before i waste any more time downloading..........can i upgrade to 6.1.3 and have a straightforward clean ipad with no jailbreak? i basically want to "unjailbreak" my ipad.
