What's new

Very disappointed

The easiest first way to try to solve ‘unexplained’ or ‘unusual’ problems with the iPad are:-

Force the offending app to close. If you have iOS 4.2 or 4.3 double-press the ‘Home’ button to bring up the multi-task bar at the bottom of the screen. Press *and hold* any icon until they start to ‘jiggle’. Then tap the top left-hand corner of the app that you want to close. It will ‘disappear’ from the list. Don’t panic - you’ve not deleted it, just closed it. Now tap the Home screen and the multi-task bar will disappear. Re-open the iPad’s app and see if the problem has resolved itself. If not, it’s on to possible solution number two!!
Restart the iPad. Press *and hold* the Power button. After a couple of seconds a slider control will appear asking you to confirm that you really want to switch the iPad off (this is all you’ll be doing). Slide the control to accept. A rotating white ‘bezel’ will appear in the iPad screen as the iPad powers down (it takes a few seconds, just like it would if you were shutting down your PC). When the screen of the iPad has gone completely blank, press *and hold* the Power button for a couple of seconds until the white Apple logo appears and the iPad starts to power up. This takes several seconds, so be patient. During the power up the automatic screen orientation function is disabled, so don’t panic. A few seconds before the power up is complete, the iPad plays a little ‘jingle’ and then you’re back to the Home screen. Restart the iPad’s app and see if the problem persists. Apple (and Forum members) recommend that you power down your iPad at least once a week, just as you might regularly completely switch off your PC. The normal procedure of just briefly pressing the Power button of the iPad merely puts it to ‘sleep’. Most Forum members have found that one of the two methods I’ve mentioned here cure a whole bunch of unexplained problems and are an easy first step to resolving most anything that happens on the iPad.

jingle on startup??? Never heard it.

This is the reason why you should never get something engraved especially if it's a new product that you are trying out. iPads are too much money to take that risk. Also the IPad has so much more to offer than just watching videos.

Instead of engraving we use clear address return labels for mailing. We just put one on the back. Sticks really nice ... looks good ... does the job. Is removable. FWIW

Check if ‘system sounds’ are enabled or if you have Mute switch set.

I don't see any such setting as System under sounds. It isn't muted either. I've never heard a startup jingle. Is it absent on iPad 2??.

Unless I missed it, what did Apple say? Out of the millions of iPads sold there are going to be some with problems. Anything manufactured can have problems, that's why all devices have warranties. Before you melt down, check with Apple. Give them a chance to fix it.

It bothers me that the Youtube app is so worthless. You do not have that problem with a real computer.

But, again, no way I could know that until I had it in my hands.

I do not see what good it does for Apple/Google/Youtube to direct the end user to a bunch of total crap.

I tried to pick the low hanging fruit such as "Tayor Swift" or "Black Eyed Peas" to find the real music videos on the worthless iPad app. No such luck.

If the moderator or the Applenut know how to do this I would appreciate it.

I use a couple of different browsers and not the native you tube app.
As far as power button are you turning it off off or putting it to sleep? I ask because if your Ipad is downloading, say a video, when you put it to sleep it will continue to work on the download and videos suck a lot of juice playing and loading.
If you have a bunch of stuff running in the background it will cause less than desired results. You can double tap the home button, hold any app that shows up along the bottom until a minus sign shows up and tap the sign on all you want to close or you can buy an app called xsysinfo that basically does it for you .
If you can hotspot your Ipad via a mifi type device and turn off 3g your battery life will be considerably better as well.
As far as the sudden black, it sounds like your Ipad for whatever reason went to sleep. If that happens again try pressing the home button and see if it actually is asleep. If so go into your settings and change the sleep time to never.
Hope that helps

What other apps or browsers do you use for youtube? do they produce more results? i agree with the OP the youtube app on the ipad is garbage!

MY way around it is SPLASHTOP. without that app I would have returned my ipad2.

I managed to get a Clear iSpot for $20 before they quit making them. It's also only $25/month for unlimited 4G service! It provides wifi service for up to 8 iDevices... In my case, any device worked with it, which was a bonus!

The problem (at least it my case) is that it doesn't work unless you are near a city with 4G coverage... It doesn't get a signal within 20 miles of my house, either (in the "country"). It does get a signal at work... and it's fast when it has a signal... but, with no 3G fallback, it's just not reliable enough. You can get a model with 3g-fallback, for a lot more per month. Actually, I think the basic 4G-only plans now start at $45/month... I'm "Grandfathered" in I'd guess you'd say for the $25/month service until I cancel it...

Sometimes free, throw-in apps are worthless. Just delete it or don't use it, just go to YouTube through Safari for the "real computer" experience.

I use Safari, Perfect Browser and Puffin. I'm not a big YouTube user and like being able to dump the HQ that the website provides for faster loading when I do use it.I don't see the need for an unboxing of a product or a how to use my camera adapter video to be HQ and I have dsl at home for wifi so I usually turn off HQ for faster loading

The very best web browser for the iPad is called 'iCabMobile'. Check it out... Has every feature imaginable - download manager, PC-type Browser Tabs, Gesture Support....

The problem is not likely with the app. The app works as designed.

Your issue is likely with the publishers; there is a lot of content on YouTube (that I've come anyway) that isn't allowed to play on mobile devices.

For music videos, your more likely to find what you want on dailymotion(free app). I find it frustrating looking for music videos on YouTube.

The iPad works a lot better on my home network than it does on that weakling AT&T service.
And I cyphered out how to fix the stuck video black screen problem. Just resynch it to another computer and the problem goes away.
I use Realplayer to download music videos off of YouTube onto a real computer then convert them to iPad format and synch iTunes to the iPad. That works perfectly.
So it is not as bad as I first feared once I learned myself some tricks.
