What's new

What I see in my backyard...

Andrew and Richard, the Bottle-Brush Tree looks likes its an ornamental tree and/or similar to a Pine Tree we have here. What is it that is coming off the end of its branches? It's very pretty by the way!

Those reddish thingymajigs you mean? Those are the flowers in the shape of a bottle brush. Night here now. I'll take a piccy for you tomorrow.

OK back next day. Here are couple of the bottle brush flowers close up. Somewhat sad looking now as the flowers are disappearing quickly with the onset of winter here. We will be pruning the tree thoroughly at the beginning of spring here, in September.

This is what they are supposed to look like at their best late spring to mid autumn

That bottle bush flower is impressive. Does it need a very large space?

We are in the middle of landscaping around our new addition. Right now it's piles of dirt and holes.

We were quite surprised ourselves how quickly and large our bottle-brush grew. We will definitely give it a big trim in September (our spring)
It's difficult to know the performance of these lovely trees in the northern hemisphere. I would give it a fair bit of room though to be on the safe side. It's great to see you have all that scope for landscaping ideas Czevski, and not limited like us to a very ordinary size suburban block.
Look forward to your progress there:)

That is one beautiful tree with the Bottle Brush Flowers! Now I get it---at first I thought it was the tree that grew in the shape of a bottle brush! The red color is just stunning. It's a shame that flowers on a tree do not last for long ...at least they don't here.

Thanks for snapping a photo of this, Andrew!! :)

Exciting times for you Czevski! It's always fun to map out the things that you want planted. Does it have a great deal of sun with trees surround the perimeter?

Standing under my walnut tree, this is what it looks like across my backyard:

Great pic of your backyard! I bet the squirrels come and visit your place often!

My girlfriend has 5 black walnut trees in her backyard which has caused a great deal of work for her. Prior to every mowing, she has to go around the yard to pick all of them up from the grass before the cutting! Sometimes she'll get 4 shopping bag fulls!

I haven't seen a squirrel up to now; I know that there are owls living in one of the trees. One summer night a few years ago, one of them (a very curious owl) frightened my daughter and a few friends of her, flying low above them. :-)

I only have this one walnut tree. In summer, we enjoy it's shadow. There's not a great deal of work with just one tree in autumn.

Oh...if you do have an owl around he will certainly frighten those little critters away!

we have a pair of Ring tail Doves that come in our back garden, they sit on the fence billing and cooing, think they have a nest close by.

We had a pair of morning doves that would visit and coo all morning long. They are one of my fav birds, so gentle and peaceful! :)

Some local water fowl was having an identity crisis in downtown Ottawa this morning.

The pigeons and gulls didn't seem to mind an interloper poaching their breakfast.
