What's new

What I see in my backyard...

We've just rescued this little fella from our garden.....he had been sitting in the rain all morning.

He's a young Kookaburra.......we'll keep him warm and safe for a time then take him to a wildlife carer in the area.

He was very hungry though!

Look at that little guy! He sure is a cute and fuzzy little thing! How big do these birds get, Leelai?

Please bear in mind that nearly all "abandoned" fledglings are just between feedings by their parents, and not in any trouble at all. You should watch intently for an hour before attempting a rescue, as feeding only takes a few seconds. It's quite normal in most species for chicks to leave the nest up to a week before they can fly. Hopping around on the ground is much safer than sitting in a nest, waiting to be found by predators.

Please keep an eye out for this chick's parents, who are probably looking for it.

If you know for sure that both parents are dead, then please excuse my unsolicited advice. But if you call a wildlife rescue agency, they will ask the same questions and give the same advice.

He sure is cute! He will double in size as he grows.

Thanks Lanny!

He was sitting in our front garden for at least 4 hours before we took him in. My daughter was watching for a parent and I have been doing the same since we did get him and so far there has been no sightings at all.

There are quite a few cats in our street and we were worried for his safety. He may also have something wrong with one of his legs as he kept stumbling....

He's eaten now and has gone into the towel in the cage and is now sleeping.

I've phoned the lady to who we have taken other birds in the past and she told us to do what we have done and to keep him warm. She also told us to lookout for the parents. We'll take him to her when she arrives home later. She will then take him to a vet for a check and once he's fine, she releases them back into the same area.

What a nice action on your part leelai! Looks as if that little guy was quite miserable before your caring intervention.
I love the Kookies. We had a lot of them around home when we were still among some market gardens properties and trees. Their laughter each morning would cheer you up for the whole day. Then more building developments, and now sadly we only hear them rarely.

He did look very miserable and forlorn......we've had some in the area for a few years now.....funny how they seemed to arrive after we set up a fish pond outside. Then we noticed our fish disappearing! :O. We had to put a net over the pond to save them, although once we did that the kookies (love that) almost cut a few fish in half until they finally gave up fishing. :)

He's fine now and most probably back with his family after the carer came here, pulled his toes/claws, one clicked into place and then she threw him in the air and off he flew.

I'm thinking other birds (parrots) may have been chasing him....we had quite a few in the garden today.

How sweet of you! I think we all got more out of it really!

Just love interacting with any type of wildlife!

That's a great ending to your efforts, Leelai! That bird is quite a beauty with its' markings. He looks like he will be quite a large bird maybe with the size of his feet/claws. Almost looks like a baby ostrich here.

Well done, leelai! Successful releases are always good news.

I, too, think young kookies are irresistibly goofy-looking. Our belted kingfishers (the closest local relative) are a bit smaller, and fairly common along rivers.

Ski......the markings on the Kookaburra are really nice....you can't really see it on the photo but those whitish dots on his wings are a light blue

They grow up to be a very solid looking bird. He had quite a wing span on him already

Loved that video Andrew!

I think everyone here has sang the kookaburra song and we've all tried to mimic that laugh of theirs. Nice memories there Admiral and Sci!

Lanny....they are so very goofy looking! That's just the right word to describe him!

The carer also put an ID ring on his leg before releasing him....I guess for some sort of monitoring if he should turn up for someone else.

I'm just so glad he was fine Hayley! Thanks!

On another note we just had brunch with our girls and a big chicken.....she lives next door and hangs out at the cafe scrounging for food....I guess that's why she's so big!

The caption was put on it by my youngest!

Ok, I just had to look up the Kookaburra's laugh and I'll have to say, that's one funny laugh! Love it, it actually made laugh a few times! :)

That's one fat chicly for sure, Leelai! Very well fed and obvious a regular at the cafe you were at! She's really cute though! :)
