What's new

What I see in my backyard...

Why thank you Andrew. It's sorely needed. It's not very pleasant for us here in UK. we seem to have storms every few days. It was blowing again last night. It was 9°C today. Lovely sunny day.

WARNING! Don't let your squirrel go to Scifan's school.

There is a squirrel-guard on this pole just out of the picture.

A squirrel can jump straight up to any feeder you can fill without a ladder, or ten feet laterally from a nearby tree or building. Trying to defeat them is hopeless, as they have nothing better to do all day than figure out how to get to the food they are certain we put out just for them. It's what they do for a living, after all. They're professionals!

I once read a little book entitled "How to Keep Squirrels Out of Your Bird Feeder." The author bought and tried every device and special feeder on the market, and every one of them was defeated within hours. He visited the world's foremost authority on the gray squirrel, a professor of zoology, and asked if there were indeed any way to keep the critters from raiding bird feeders. The prof thought awhile, and said, "Treat them like chickens." "Chickens?!" "Yes, chickens. First, preheat the oven to 425 degrees..." ;)

Yeah-squirrels are quite the amazing jumpers. Despite everything we have put up to stop our squirrels from getting into our bird feeders, they somehow find ways to jump the distance to get to the feed. It's actually quite funny to watch them climb the posts, sometimes they slip and fall with their first few attempts. It's all a pretty good show! ;)

A special surprise for me! <img src="http://www.ipadforums.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=53002"/> I hope this pileated woodpecker keeps coming around. I love the way he looks.

What a lovely woodpecker! Do they make a lot of noise when they are pecking?

Love his colouring on his head!

You betcha they're loud! A Pileated Woodpecker is the size of an American Crow, or about the same size as an Australian Raven. They are heavy and strong. They were the model for Woody Woodpecker.

When Woodpeckers are anywhere near my house, I can hear them from several blocks away, and this is for small Woodpeckers.

Oh my......I'm thinking that would get very annoying if they do it for any length of time.

Kinda glad we don't have them then! ;)

It's not really that bad. At least you know, that the tree where it's working is rotten inside.

Oh, okay......so they only target rotted trees? For food I'm thinking then.

Thanks.....very interesting, I've just had no experience with this type of bird......besides Woody Woodpecker that is! ;)

They're looking for insect larvae, burrowing insects, etc.. I've also seen then pecking at power poles.
