What I see in my backyard...

That's awesome that you saw them on your trip. When we went out to San Diego-we spent a day at the zoo. I must have spent 2 hours watching the koalas-just love how they look. I am just fascinated with them! Did you take these with a camera or your iPhone ?

I took these with my new iPhone......quite good I thought.

Did they allow you to hold the koalas in the San Diego zoo?

Do you have the big slugs? I've seen them over 6" long.

That's what I thought about the iPhone camera-that's is pretty darn good for a point and shoot! I was wondering if you thought the same and guess we're on the same page!

Lol.....:D

Aren't they cute Gab! I just wanted to grab one for a cuddle. They were sitting so low I could have too! :O

What happens if you grab one in the wild? Are they as docile as the look?

Yep, I've seen some monsters here too......they used to get in the house at night but slug pellets and salt seems to have put an end to that!

No, not by a long shot.....they would be worried you're going to hurt them and would react to defend themselves.

They have very large claws.......I have held one but it was from a zoo.

Thanks leelai. Unlike you, I have not been close enough to a koala to photograph one in the wild like in your great photos. I thought your other nature photos were also very good indeed. Due to recent dry weather here in South Australia, the little critters are climbing down from their gum trees (from which they normally get enough moisture from eating their gum leaves) to approach suburban homes where they readily accept water left out by people.

Talking about seeing them in the wild, there was an article and photos recently in our daily paper where a koala had been wandering along the Eastern Express Way in the Adelaide Hills approach to Adelaide. The driver of a huge transport multi-axle rig, stopped his long slow descent requiring use of very low gears so brakes don't burn out. This big bloke then hopped out to weave in among the lanes of traffic, to pick up the little guy and gently deposit him in bushes at the edge of the Freeway. We have a lot of them in the Adelaide hills fringing the city, requiring "Beware of Koalas Crossing" signs in a number of places.

That's kinda funny. I wonder if I'm alone in envisioning your average Aussie as wandering around in the bush with a couple of koalas and a 'roo, wearing cricket pads, of course.

And don't forget the broad-brimmed Akubra hat with the corks dangling down in defience of the flies as he trudges along singing Waltzing Matilda. :D

Oops! Forgot that bit, along with the ice cold stubby permanently in the hand that doesn't contain a boomerang.

But us Canadians are taught not to generalize.

Comes from teaching the rest of the world that we don't live in igloos. Not in summer anyway.

Thank you Andrew.....I have heard about the dry weather in Adelaide as we have family down there but it's sad thinking of the koalas not getting enough moisture from their leaves......I am envisioning a photo taken during all the bush fires a couple of years ago where firefighters came across a koala and were giving him a drink of water from a bottle. I think that photo touched the hearts of so many Aussies......

All my photos were taken in the vicinity of the Great Ocean Road during a recent trip. It's the first time I've ever seen so many koalas in one place. We too have Koala crossing signs in many areas up here in Brisbane but it's very rare that you actually get to see 1.

What a lovely story too.....I think koalas can melt the hearts of many big burly Aussies! And that's such a great thing!!

Hmm,a good tip if I ever come across one that's emigrated to the UK.
