I leave the system mute switch on most of the time because it mutes the annoying keyboard clicks. That way I can still listen to music while typing.
You don't have to use the mute switch to mute the keyboard clicks:
Settings->General->Sounds>Keyboard Clicks->Off

:)

Yeah, I originally used that option, but when I'm just typing and not listening to music at the same time, I actually like to hear the clicks. I never used the rotation lock switch before, but I do use the switch quite often now.

:confused:Yes. I want back the rotation hard switch to control Portrait or Landscape display rotation.

I love iPad's resposivenes to rotation. But need that quick switch to select the display format, espcially when surfing while lying down in bed ( a lifestye the iPad offers that notebooks and netbooks with their clumsy keypad section cannot). Now with the switch programmed to Mute function, it is such a long process to rotate control the displayed image. Instead of only sliding a hard switch, I need 5-steps to do that simple thing: (1) press Home hard button twice, (2) slide bootm dock to the right to reveal the rotation icon, (3) touch the rotation lock icon, (4) slide back the dock, (5) touch the Safari icon to return to surfing! Wow, 5 steps to do what was only a single step before Apple changed this.

I want the hard swith back to control rotation, Alternatively, allow the user to set it as a rotation switch or as a mute switch.;) Build it in the Settings menu.

I wonder what other settings and functions (apart from those features Apple publcised in its iOS 4.2.1 website) have changed with the iOS 4.2.1 ugrade:confused: Can someone tell me?

Thanks.

I bought an IPad with a rotation control switch at the side - exactly what I wanted. Portrait to read etc and switch to landscape to type and look at the web.

I want what I bought and apple has changed my IPad to a bl...y iPod.

Ummmmmm, you do you often flip your iPad around from side to side while you are reading? Or do you hold it steady? How do you hold a book when you read?

It still stays in the proper orientation as long as you don't lay it down flat or flip it upside down or something.

So what's the problem exactly? People are making it seem that now that the 4.2 update moved the lock switch that the iPad now uncontrollably flips around and changes orientation even while holding it still. It's not a big problem people, get over it.

It's not a big problem, but in my opinion, it grew to a rather big annoyance.
First I thought it's not too bad to double click the home button, swipe the taskbar, press the lock-icon and press the home button again.
But after using it for a while, I see that I change orientation much more often than I thought. Read a mag in portrait (lock on, as I carry around my iPad a lot in the house), surf the web in landscape (lock on again), go back reading a book, play a game in landscape.....

So yes, I find it rather annoying and it'll be something I won't get over with.

Sometimes, I need to view some web pages in portrait and others in landscape mode while surfing the same website. Some web pages are too broad to fit into Portrait mode with legibel size font; so, I need to quickly rotate the view to Landscape to see the whole width of the same page. The rotate button as originally placed allows this quick switch without leaving the webpage being viewed.

So, I am asking Apple to modify the OS with a Setting option to allow users to designate this hard button for "rotation" function or for "mute" function. Apple's powerhouse and strong engineering team (apparently they listen to users' needs) can implement this with an OS update to its iOS 4.2.1 to satisfy Apple's diverse range of customers.

Thanks to all for your views.

Let's hear from Apple. And also Appple, please tell us what other changes were made in iOS 4.2.1 that were not advertised in your Apple iOS 4.2.1 website. Are there any references on how to use thise new features of iOS 4.2.1? (I only learnt of how to use the new Folder feature through a forum only after puzzling over many hours of how to use the Folder feature, and discovered the function of this rotation switch no longer worked, also through a forum !!! )

Please explain further how this is a massive problem.

Do you find it difficult to hold the screen steady while reading or watching a movie? Maybe you should see a neurologist if you are having that much difficulty holding still.

That's some comedy gold! Maybe you should see a talent scout and start entertaining the nation with your dry wit. [/sarcasm]

Yes I find it difficult to hold the screen steady most of the time, since I usually use the iPad in a reclining chair. More importantly I find the new function of the button utterly useless. I refer you to the results of the poll.

I agree with nooris. I often use my iPad on the sofa for reading, having the iPad lying on the armrest. Just a slight move of the iPad can rotate the screen.

There are people who are annoyed by having lost the hardware swicht for screen orientation and there are people who are not.
So what's the problem. Just because it's not a problem for you doesn't indicate that it mustn't be a problem for others.
So let everyone have their own opinion, please.

Everyone is welcome to their own opinion.

The only time this should be a problem is if the iPad is laying flat or nearly flat. My iPad is in the Apple case, and I simply use the little prop tool to have it at a slight angle, and I never get any screen rotation while using on my couch or while stretched out on the recliner.

Why would you be laying it completely flat anyways?

I think people are complaining about it so they have something to be upset about. Stop letting it bug you so much, it's a little thing and you guys are sweating it like it's the end of the world.
