What's new

Architecture - buildings that is

Yesterday, I managed to visit Hyde Park Corner to see and photograph the various war memorials. Our guest, Tim, came along with me. He commented that the place is reminiscent of the memorial drive in Washington.

There are numerous war memorials at Hyde Park Corner. It's a place for thought. My photographs ...

Looking eastwards towards Birdcage Walk. The metal posts between Wellington Arch and the Duke of Wellington statue are the New Zealand

The Australia War Memorial. Water cascades gently down most of the slate wall, emphasising the place names tooled into the slate.

The Royal Artillery memorial

The memorial gate to those from the Indian sub-continent, Africa and the Caribbean who lost their lives in both World Wars.

The Bomber Command war memorial. There was a crowd there paying respects. The roof metal comes from a Halifax bomber donated by the Bomber Command museum in Canada.

Great pics, Richard. This does remind me of my visit to Washington DC with the memorial wall and fallen soldiers. Beautiful pictures, looks like this was an all day event for you and Tim!

Thanks Skimonkey. Yes, it was an all day one. We fitted in some last minute shopping that morning. Then, once we were back in Bromley we were off to the shops to find the ladies at a reunion. We didn't find them - they were off window shopping. :) followed by some spending ;)

I see why we need that rest. LOL. Or is it loll about? ;)

Scifan.....that must be so long ago for you now....I still pass by my old schools, they certainly conjure up memories of a different age!

I graduated from the school in 1971.

And the Principal would still give you the strap if you misbehaved.

Oh yes, forgot about the 'cuts'. That's what they were called here and done across an open hand.....which were outlawed years ago. But they were only for naughty boys! ;)

This is a view of the Barbican from the Museum of London.

While talking about the museum, these pics - not very good - are of a couple of displays. The figures are in a display, with videos played at intervals, of the Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens - a type of fun fair and circus from mid Victorian times. The other is set post war. I think we used cars like the one on display back in the 1950s.

Strictly speaking, it's in the Vatican City, an independent country, not Italy. Great pic, though.

I was going to comment that the Vatican buildings can be seen off to the right. I'd forgotten the detail you have given, Kevin. We have visited. It's a fascinating place.

I've never been there. I was in Rome once, and I was considering driving down that way to see if I could park my truck close enough to walk there, but the back streets of Rome and 45 foot trailers don't mix too well.
