Architecture - buildings that is

I've never been there. I was in Rome once, and I was considering driving down that way to see if I could park my truck close enough to walk there, but the back streets of Rome and 45 foot trailers don't mix too well.

Our coach driver got a fine for some parking transgression. The parking regulations in Rome are pretty confusing! I think an Artic parked up next to the tour coaches would serve to confound everyone! :D

Yeah, somehow I don't think the Swiss Guard would have believed me if I'd told them that the Pope had ordered a couple of Caterpillar front end loaders.

It's London Open House weekend today and tomorrow. This means free and informed access to lots of buildings! I hope Londoners on the iPF will be able to visit and post photos. ;)

OK, Hayles. It was a great day. We managed to see a nice cross-section of buildings as regards age, use and size! The Charing Cross branch of the Northern Line was closed which added onto our journey time from Camden to Charing Cross :(

LONDON OPEN HOUSE WEEKEND - September 2012.

OK, here is the first batch of photographs which I took on the Saturday.

Our first visit was to Moorfields Eye Hospital to see a wing paid for by private finance and grants.

One of the architects was our guide. A number of artists were commissioned for sculptures and small humorous pieces of art work with a medical theme. The sun shading to the main facade of the building represents a flock of seagulls.

We then went to see a small shop in Horsey Road. The owner, an eccentric American :) , looked after us. The interior dates from the 1900s. The white cashier's office was rescued from a buyer at te last minute; the local conservation officer put an emergency listing on the shop to protect its interior. We loved this gem of a place.

Then, we went to Charing Cross to see Benjamin Franklin's London home. Well, he occupied one floor of the building.

........ LONDON OPEN HOUSE WEEKEND 2012 - Part 2

On our way to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office we popped into the Banqueting House. There was one execution there. On 30th January 1649, Charles 1st walked the plank through one of the windows to a scaffold where he was beheaded.

The ceilings are so rich. A light snack, instead of a banquet ;)

I do love taking visitors to the FCO building. It's my 4th time there!

It's hard to believe that this building was saved from demolition in the 1960s. The builder decorating our house worked in the FCO Building, removing panelling ( which covered over the splendid interiors ) in preparation for the demolition. The work was halted, thank goodness.

What a legacy we now have. Talking of legacies.........

Here's The Artesian, a local live theater. It's housed in a former church.

Is that a remodeled heritage building?

Did you take the pictures with you Android phone or Kindle Fire?

Hi Bob, it's good to see you.

I took the photos with a Canon digital camera. The Powershot bridge type camera.
