I take the point about somebody starting a new thread if this is closed, but the title of this thread gets people excited.

i bought my ipad 2 32G 3G & Wifi last 24 Dec 2011. on the 3rd day, i accidentally dropped it on the office table. (to be detailed, i'm tryin to take a picture of my officemates, while holding it and trying to switch from video to camera, it fell off from the smart cover. first dropped to my hand then the table approx 12 inches apart) first it was just a tiny scratch on the upper left corner. everything is fine except from the area of that scratch was not functioning anymore. after few weeks, the scratch become bigger it was like one hairline that sliced the screen into half. which means half of it is not functioning by this time. not functioning means icons within the area cant be touched. of course the hassle is to rotate your ipad just to be able to touch an icon, very inconvenient...last saturday, 11th of feb 2012, that's almost 2 mos after i bought, i had a chance to bring the broken ipad (2) to hk apple center coz we doesnt have one here in Macau (China). i told the (Genius) guy with all honesty my story. but i even told him that after reading the guidelines with regards to warranty, design issue is an excemption. i'm willing to pay just to fix but i'd like them to know that their "smart cover" isnt smart at all. then the guy told me he will replaced my broken ipad with a new one. after few sec, i got a new one. i'm very happy coz i didnt expect that much.

hey brotha, try to other apple service centre, my friend got same issue as yours, they also replaced it with a new one on the same day...

Yep. You could try at least one more store. You might get lucky and find someone more attentive or more sympathetic to deal with. Sometimes your first encounter was with someone who was having a bad day or didn't quite understand your situation, so it's worth another shake elsewhere. However, their willingness to work with you may also depend on notes made on your account by the previous rep, if any were made regarding the damage and assessment during the first visit. I would submit to anyone thinking about doing this that it's also to say don't try to make the rounds and hit every store in your region looking for someone who will give in. Companies that have access to customer account info at every location tend to pay attention to that sort of activity. Two denials should be enough of an answer. The very notion that you can at least TRY and that Apple IS willing to accommodate, on a case-by-case basis, is still remarkable enough in today's world where most companies' reps shrug their shoulders and flat-out say "too bad, so sad".

Warranties come with everything electrical, but it does not and never has covered accidental breakage.
You can only try some of the suggestions here.

I have a question. I have an iPad 2 that I bought from Apple online. I live on the eastern side of KY. The only stores are in Lexington, Louiseville, Cinncinatti and Columbus OH. Today as I was getting out of the car, my iPad slid out of it's leather case. It enclosure is magnet and the whole pad was in it. However, the enclosure opened and iPad fell out face down on driveway. Yes it is cracked from a mid point from home button to the right corner is a curve. I have read almost all the posts, but would it be a waste of time to travel to the closest store which is Lexington or biggest store in Columbus? Should I call them first and explain or just go in? Any insight would be greatful.

I would be making a genius bar appointment first wherever you go. I don't know if I would tell them why straight up, I think you would make a better impression in person, especially if you are genuinely upset about what you've done. It seems to be a case by case scenario here and it may depend if they have a stock of iPads in store for this reason or not. So do you think a bigger store would more likely have replacement stock on hand? Who can tell. I would be genuinely remorseful about it, not expect anything and maybe show you can't really afford much here, but be very nice. Good luck!!

I cracked my iPad 2 screen as well and was mortified! I went to the Apple store at the Mall of America to see about getting it fixed... I got it as a gift so no receipt and or warranty etc. I felt like an neglectful parent when I showed them what I had done. They replaced the iPad and I did t even ask them to! It would've cost $400 otherwise. Apple customer service Nd customer care rocks!

Wish I was going to the stores most of you go to. My 3 year old accidentally pushed my ipad2 off the table and the screen cracked. I saw this forum and decided to go in to my local apple store in Roseville California and tell them what happened. All they did was tell me stuff happens and it would be 260.00 to swap to another one. I was so upset I really did cry and they still charged me. I really don't understand how one store can offer a free replacement when others can't or won't. Doesnt make sense to me.

Totally on the spot. I had a similar situation happen to me in December. I live 3.5 hours away (though only 98 miles, it's through the Cascade Mountains and with snow) from the nearest Apple Store. I called the store directly and spoke to a rep there, explained everything, where I live, etc. Even after all that, he still suggested I make an appointment to have it looked at and advised me to do a full backup "In case, you know, it has to be replaced for some reason". I drove there on a Sunday, met up with another rep whom I explained everything to just as I did on the phone with another rep a couple of days earlier. He first told me how much it would cost to get a replacement (essentially new at 1/2 price with swap). That was when I told him I'd driven all that way and that my finances are limited because I have a disability and am on a fixed lower income. He asked me to wait a bit so he could talk to someone and about twenty minutes later I left the store a happy customer with a new replacement iPad. Just be honest, sincere and polite. I think that also goes a long way, particularly since they more than likely put up with their share of janky, rude or upset customers.
