What's new

imovie on ipad2 can ONLY edit ipad videos

On my pc I have canon video clips... What do I need to convert them to before I upload them into my iTunes?

I can see a couple vid clips in my video folder but they won't show up in my camera roll or iMovie. They just sit in the video folder. I converted them in a pc program on my home system. I'm not very snappy on this type of stuff sorry... Go slow haha. All I want is the canon video clips to be able to show up in iMovie or reeldirector... That's all haha. Thnx

Michael please help!

Yeah, plus check this out, I found a good work around on compatibility issues of movies. It's a lil extra work nut worth it as both Reel Director and Imovies have their benefits over the other one. Like with imovies, I like all the sound fx and built in themes and theme music.
Ok here we go,
1) u need both Reel Director and Imovies. As this is for moving movies that can't be seen thru imovies, but reel director can.

2)go into reel director, load up the movie u want to use in Imovies. It will then compress the video. Then go back out to main screen. Press the render tab as it will render it making it a final product. Note, rendering the file makes it bigger. For ex. I rendered a 7.8mb file and when it was done, it eneded being like 14mb. Plus thru ifiles, I saw it converts the mp4 into .MOV format.

3)once completed , press the box to save it to camera roll. Once it's saved. Exit the Reel director app.

4) start up imovies apps. Press the + sign for new project and now ur movie is seen by imovies and u can edit it now thru that app.

I like to use a combo of the two apps using various fx and techniques from both. I tried again, with ifiles, to move a mp4 movie into the camera roll folder n imovies still wouldn't see it. I think the movies have to be originally saved in camera roll folder and be in mp4 or mov. Format. The reason imovies could now see the movies thru reel director is because it saved them to camera roll and rendered/converted it to .MOV format. Works every time if u got a movie that reel director sees but imovies doesn't. Just do those steps and it will finally show up in imovies. A lil tedious but works. Plus u can always delete the original movie if u wish cuz in a way, this makes a copy of ur movie but in a way or format to where imovies can see it.

Nice to see my workaround working for others ;-) m
So what are you exactly asking to do? Trying to get movies u have on iTunes, shot from another cam, onto imovies? If so, then if already in iTunes on pc, then u should be able to just sync the movies to your iPad album or imovies itself. I'm speaking on this, theoretically, because ice never used iTunes to put movies onto my iPad. My iPad is jailbroken so I use ifiles( from Cydia) to transfer all my movies wherever needed. Once u do have movies finally transferred to iPad, try to see if imovies recognize the movies. If doesn't try reel director. If they show up in reel director but not imovies, then try my workaround. If imovies still not seeing them after all that, then u need to convert your movies using the free pc tool another member had suggested in this same thread also. With mines, I like to do everything within the iPad if possible. I hate having to sync to iTunes.
Post back and let us know how it went. My name is Michael also ;-)

Check out my post on the previous page. MPEG Streamclip is free, fast, works on Windows and Mac OS, and so easy to use. My Canon video clips work great in iMovie on the iPad. Once you open iMovie up to any video format it becomes much more useful.

I love that I can keep adding multiple audio tracks to my hearts content. Last week I edited a short 720p video, and wrote my own music score in Garageband, mixed it with VO, sound FX, and nat sound in iMovie, all while in flight from Kansas City to Boston. :)

I'll try to help, I use a PC so I can give tips for XP. I'm indebted to Demandarin and Zwiller5 for their earlier posts which helped me solve the problem you're working on.

The trick is to get your clips into the right folder on your iPad, which (counterintuitively) ISN'T in the Videos app, it will be a subfolder in the Photos app that iTunes will create during syncing. So here goes, starting with the assumption that you've already converted your clips and are ready to sync them:

1. On your PC, create a new subfolder in My Documents/My Pictures. I called mine, creatively enough, Movies. Copy or move your clip(s) to be synced into this folder.

2. Bring up iTunes and let it connect to your iPad. (I have my iTunes set to sync manually so I don't have to wait for it to go through a sync cycle before I even get to what I want to do).

3. When connected, in the left pane click on the name of your iPad to open the window containing details about it. In the bar across the top of that window is a list of things like Apps, Music, etc. The last on on the right should be Photos. Click on that one.

4. In that window do each of the following steps: check "Sync photos from and select (as in my example) My Pictures. The first time you do this you may get a warning that all movies and music on your iPad will be deleted, do you wish to continue? As I had only 40 tunes and no movies, I said yes. Later is was a matter of a few seconds to resync the music. In subsequent video transfers this message hasn't appeared and no music has been deleted, only that first time. We'll leave the question of why music and movies need to be deleted to sync a few clips. That's for larger minds.

5. Next, select the radio button titled Selected Folders, then checkmark the box that says Include Videos. A list of folders in the My Pictures folder on the PC is displayed; checkmark the Movies folder (or whatever you named it) that you created in step 1.

6. Down in the lower right of the iTunes window, press the Apply button. The settings you made will be memorized and there should be a sync cycle. If not, press Sync (above the Apply button) once the Applying is done.

7. When the sync is done, open the Photos app. Press the Albums button at the top and you'll see there's a Camera Roll album and a Movies album (or whatever you named your folder in step 1). The clip you transferred should show up there.

8. It should also show up in both ReelDirector and in iMovie (if so it's high five time).

I've discovered that if I take a video out of the My Documents/My Pictures/Movies folder it's deleted from the iPod the next time I sync. If by that time you've already made a movie from it, that should pose no problem.

I'm now checking on whether there's a way to transfer clips without converting them. Others have trod that road before so I may be wasting my time. I did find that using this method earlier tonight I transferred an unconverted .mov file to my iPad and it showed up in both moviemaking apps. That clip was made in WVGA format in my camera, I'll see if I can get a 720p clip to sync.

I hope this helps, otherwise I just wasted a lot of typing--and your time.

I'll have to get that update, but before then I'll report that I was able to import a 720p clip into my iPad 2 a few moments ago, and it is visible/can be loaded into both iMovie and ReelDirector. The latter program can import the clip but I couldn't play or render it. Maybe it would have to be in a lower resolution to work in RD, as I've successfully made videos with RD using clips made at WVGA resolution.

To import the clip I first converted it from a .mov file to an .mp4 file as Zwiller5 detailed in another post or thread

Wow! I'm going to try it for sure. Thanks for your time!

Update on transferring unconverted clips (per the next-to-last paragraph in my earlier post):

The unconverted .mov file I synced to the iPad was recorded in WVGA. It does show up on the iPad but neither iMovie nor ReelDirector can use it. iMovie can't find it even though it's in the Movies folder in the Photos app. ReelDirector can see and import it but when I try to play or render it the program won't do it--says the video is "null." Tried it again today using a Camera Connector Kit. Again, unconverted and .mov files could be imported from the camera's SD card but can't be used in either movie-making app.

So converting appears to be the only option. That dashes my hopes of being able to get by on vacation without taking my netbook along. I had dreams of needing only the tiny camera, the iPad, and the Connection Kit. Sigh...

When you go into your photos album....are you able to select it? Regardless wether it plays or not. Can you then click the arrow in the upper right corner and upload to youtube?

I didn't try uploading to YouTube. For now I'm looking to make videos for home use. Once I get good at it though....look out youtube!

No....what I do is upload to youtube....set the flag to private and then used tag disk hd ~ free version from the app store or yourtube hd from cydia which then downloads perfectly formatted for ipad.

And every video Ive done this way imports to both imovie and RD. Then if you wish delete the original from youtube account.

A basic work around until imovie and RD update their codecs.

Good work around, I'm going to try that.

The keepvid website works as well for downloading and converting youtube vids to mp4 that works in iMovie, if you're using a PC.

I didn't know that about using YouTube that way! It sounds like a good workaround. Now I wonder if I should have returned the Camera Connection Kit.

The YouTube Turnaround Workaround did not work for me since I cannot "click" the videos loaded from my SD cards in anything higher quality then VGA. The thumbnails are just little white boxes that say "MOV".

Darn

May I suggest trying a couple free apps to see if they might help?
Pixelpipe ~ post & upload to social web.
Flipshare ~ used for uploading flip videos...but also might work.

Both free

Then use other apps I mentioned to download from youtube.
