What's new

Name a Pet Peeve!

Unfortunately in England, they don't fail, they just go up to the next year. In SA, you had to pass an exam at the end of the year which was much more motivating than knowing you just pass anyway.

Students also swear at you and call you all sorts of names and they seem to get away with it. Pat on the head, never mind, they have problems at home, bless them! No, that is no excuse to do whatever you like. I have loads of kids with the same background and they wouldn't dream of swearing at a member of staff. I have patience, I suppose and a sense of humour but even I get upset eventually.
This week was one of those weeks to cry and complain.

That's why I'm still there. I'm there for them. To get them through their science exams.

Good on you Hayles, I admire all teachers. It must be a very tough job in today's society. Teachers are often expected to teach our children so much more besides school work. A lot of parents just aren't doing their jobs in raising children with manners, respect, a good set of morals to live by, honesty, integrity and so many other traits which seem to have just fallen by the wayside. Children are being exposed to far too much before they have the maturity to know the best way to deal with it. Our children should be allowed to be just that, children and parents need to really start parenting. Off my soapbox now.

Do you know, a student of mine who is 11, said he plays that Black ops game for 18year olds and his little 3 year old brother plays it as well. This is me, gobsmacked!

Good post. Here in Cali. One must have a license to fish. But any fool can have a child.

Just not right, kids are being desensitized by all this violence, where are the parents, why aren't they stopping it.

I say gobsmacked too. Great word!

Us Brits have some fantastic sayings but if you asked me to say them all, I would not remember half of them. We had a great thread with everyone's sayings from various countries but I forget what it was called.

Yes we have a lot of them here too. I think a lot of them would be the same considering most of us trace our lineage back to GB. Rhyming Slang too? Love it, some are hilarious and what fun trying to work some of them out. It's not often you run across people now who use it a lot

Totally. My husband mentors kids through a work program and was appalled to learn that an 8-year-old assignee watched the most violent movies and played equally gruesome games. He kept saying how that was wrong, but didn't have standing to urge the parents to cut off the kid.

Violent games just desensitize kids to violence which is bad, but they don't make them more aggressive or violent which the tabloids would have you believe I've played them all my life and I'm not a drug dealing homicidal pimp.

Unfortunately, some of the kids I deal with will end up in jail one day. Stealing by the time they are 11 and I have no idea whether that was before they arrived. Sad but true. Yes, I agree the papers do exaggerate but that is to sell their papers. Most kids are sensible and can cope with these games but I am talking about the ones where the parents are too young with no sense of what is right themselves never mind the kids they bring up. You just don't want to know what their home life is but that is where school life tries to bring normalcy to their lives where respect rules but we do have our failures too.

Yes, they have no respect for anyone. Very sad but predictable. It's when you have their kids in a few years and nothing has changed that's when some would give up and move to another job!
