The writing has been this shows strength in its more recent seasons. Something on-air as long as Dr. Who has been, would normally have become stale long before now.

I understand that Stephen Moffat, the head writer is leaving the show after this series so it'll be interesting to see where it goes after he is gone.

Indeed. His idea of structure is evident throughout although the premiere was a standalone episode. It was entertaining but definitely a departure from the "Who" world.

Your hunch is correct, I already have a membership. I purchased it as soon as it was available.
 
San Antonio, Texas, a five minute walk from the Alamo.

The Alamo is great to visit at day and night. It's closed at night, but lit up outside and makes you think how how they would've had to huddle inside at all hours. The Riverwalk is an easy walk away, too. And space-wise, if you have a day extra, the Houston Space Center is about four hours one way, driving time.
