The "Anything Goes" thread

this is a great thread.

from the higgs boson via manholes to general roadworks, and i'm sure i've seen sergeant pepper mentioned at least once.

i had a similar fascination not long ago with a jar of lemon curd i found in my fridge. never wittingly having purchased such a thing i'm still conducting experiments to establish what may be its purpose, if not its meaning. (its origins very possibly are lost in the mists of time). i have a hunch that adding some vodka to it may assist the matter greatly. in fact, seeing that it's coming up quarter to one on a friday night and i'm peckish i may go about it right now and then report back, if that's all right with everyone...

Hi there Sebastian

Welcome to the forum & this odd thread!

I'm just having a late toast fest (granary & scrape) and if it's OK with you, I'll join you in a snifter of vodka & lemon...curd.

Sounds a bit iffy if you don't know or can't remember the original purpose. In other words, it must be really old and probably growing hairy mould. But never mind, if it's Scientific & Experimental, must be OK.

I was just day dreaming about twittering. I never have. But if I did, what would I want to say that was of significance in 140 (?) letters? Whatever the text turned out to be, how about trying to say it using the rule that I must use ALL the letters allowed in as FEW words as was possible?

Hmmm. All the words would need to be really adventurous long ones. And the text has also to be meaningful, if not deep.

That is as far as my brain has travelled so far. As soon as my glass of the V & LC arrives & is downed I will need to retire. Perhaps pick it up tomorrow...the twitty idea, not the V&LC!

Edit: Admiral, what's a Cylon?

Edit: Admiral, what's a Cylon?

Cylons are cybernetic organisms featured in the
science fiction / dramatic TV series "Battlestar Galactica.". There are 12 models. ;)

The re-imagined series that ran for 4 seasons featured popular UK actor Jamie Bamber portraying the character "Lee (Captain Apollo) Adama."

Keep following my avatars. :)

thank you so much, stranding, you've just added another wonderful and wondrous dimension to the mix, that of twitter and tweeting, which i can only recommend. i also like your suggested approach of finding the longest possible words and always arrive at exactly 140 characters. i already do this. (attempt using exactly 140 characters, i'm not so concerned with the length or number of words. i succeed in, i think, 92.7% of cases.)

and you also asked admiral the exact question that i had on my mind, so thank you also to admiraladama for elucidating.

also, i'm happy to report that i have conducted my lemon curd and vodka experiment (and expanded it to include some whisky too). the findings are briefly summarised here:

look forward to hearing your news and indeed to seeing where this magnificent thread will go next...

Anyone read "The Songs of Distant Earth"? I ask as we are presently doing the SF thing.

No, although I did enjoy reading A C Clarke's books. I must do some look the book out and read some of his other work again.

I guess I've got a foundation for an iBooks collection. (Now that was quite a trilogy ;) )

I think Space 1999 deserves a mention. It was a very enjoyable escape. :)

I couldn't agree more. Gerry and Sylvia Anderson are the main reason, I think, that science fiction found a home on TV. Television is a "hit them over the head" medium. Science fiction is thoughtful but they made the genre work on TV.

I remember as a kid being mesmerized by their earlier creations like "Fireball XL5", "Thunderbirds" & "Stingray". I was also a big fan of "UFO" even though it was a flop
in ratings and lasted only one season.

Lew Grade deserves credit too. Without his penchant for risk taking and the resources of his ITC and AP Films subsidiary, science fiction / fantasy programming would have died an early death on TV.

Last decade's "Battlestar Galactica" reboot was a remarkable comeback for science fiction TV, in large part because it was also a dramatic series. Had it been distributed on network TV instead of cable, it would have found a bigger audience. Sadly the money ran out before the creative genius.

"BSG" also elevated the standing of the musical score in television production. The orchestral maneuvers of composer Bear McCreary made every episode soar.

Yes I have - twice. I think it was some of his (Clarke's) best work. The "space elevator" concept blew me away. Have you listened to Mike Oldfield's album of the same name?
It's a book tie-in but it was several years after publishing before the music was recorded and released on the "Warner" music label. Available at (shameless plug) iTunes for $9.99.

Have you read and watched "First Men In The Moon?"

Arthur C. Clarke is one of my all time favourite authors, I found that all of his books were/are enthralling!

We didn't have that on TV here, so no wonder it's unfamiliar. (And thanks for explaining about Cylon. :-))

Instead we have Star Trek, in the various series, Dr. Who and used to have The X Files. Oh, and Quatermass!

Dr Who used to be great years ago, all shaky cardboard effects, filmed in the alien quarry at the weekends when it was empty, & of course, the police box time machine. It used to scare me silly, like Quatermass. But Dr Who has gone a bit odd now. Too complex to follow, and just daft. In my opinion of course.

Edit: forgot that series with the huge ball chasing people in that village....can't remember the name.

Back from a walk downtown. Farmers market and the first week- end of World Championships. Just practice this week-end. Things officially start Wednesday, but many competitors come for 2 weeks.

At the top of the tower way in the background is an osprey nest.

I've enjoyed Dr. Who off and on through the years.

A 1969 film "Journey To The Far Side Of The Sun"
also UK produced is a favourite of mine. It's old school (Gerry & Sylvia Anderson) and uses miniatures for SFX.

Most of the filming was done at Pinewood. In Europe the film was released as "Doppelgänger."
It's a fun ride.
