The "Anything Goes" thread

On Thursday night December 13th, the Geminid meteor shower will peak with rates of 100 to 120 meteors per hour.

Best way to see these is to head to an open ( non light polluted) area.

Observing devices are not required.

This event takes place from about 8 pm EST till dawn.

Yeah!

Thanks for the reminder.

Looks like it might not be too cloudy tomorrow evening. If not, then it will be the first meteor shower that I'll have had a chance to observer for at least two years.

Awful, awful news!

Massive shooting in Connecticut. Primary school, ages 5 - 10 years of age. Oh, I do so hope that the 27 suspected dead is false. Poor, poor kids. I pray for their souls.

It seems nowhere is safe these days. Malls, schools, theaters, etc it's getting out of hand.

There never was any safe place, anything can happen at anytime and anywhere. Newtown, CT is a very affluent town and is not an inner city, crazies are everywhere... I think more so in places like there.

I went out around 9pm. Lots of clouds on most of the horizon, but the majority of the sky was clear, with that special crispness that you get when there is no moon and the lower temperatures remove most of the moisture in the air.. The stars were worth the walk by themselves, and I did see several meteors.

Nippy though, so I wimped out after 20 minutes or so. ;)

The shooting is so tragic in particular at this time of year. CNN are saying that the number of dead is closer to 30 with many being children. Gunman killed on scene. Daily Mail reports that killer's father found dead at the family home and that the killings were centered around his mother's class. She is a teacher at the school.

The shooter's mother is one of the dead at the school. 18 of the 27 were children. There was also a second shooter - one of the shooters is dead. I can't (and don't want to) imagine what happens to someone to cause this.

The other shooter is the brother of the dead one. He was captured in the woods outside the school. The dead shooter's son is reported among the dead children. The mother taught kindergarten so it is feared that most of the dead were of that age.

It's unfortunate that the best viewing months are in the winter. My fingers fall off while fiddling with lenses. It's nicer to go for a walk - take the binocs and catch the wide field view.

I can stare forever at the Pleiades.
When in Jan / Feb at 03:00 when I go to work if I know it's going I be clear, I give myself an extra 15-20 minutes to look at Orion.

I came home from school trying to understand how things like this can happen. School is supposed to be a safe place. We send our kids knowing that they will be safe and cared for. I guess there is no safe place. My prayers are with everyone.

The one thing I dislike about Christmas is that silly song. You know the one.. where dogs are barking jingle bells.

You know we have unwritten rules about reminding people about such stuff. I suggest an hour of very loud Iron Maiden to help clear the thoughts from your head. It's good medicine.
