What's new

What music are you listening to right now!?!?

Went into Costco at the weekend and acquired a WD My Passport 2Tb HDD for my Mac, so now I have my entire iTunes library on there.

Not bad for $138. It's incredible how much hard drive you can get for the money, these days.

So I'm having a blast of Black Sabbath - Headless Cross

Nah. It's because for some of us, almost everything done since 1980 is boring and/or ugly noise. I grew up playing and listening to classical, not pop or rock, so there are no deep R&R connections to anything in my youth. I became somewhat interested in progressive rock around 1975, going to some concerts and buying a few records. Then the rest of the world punked out, and when rock went boring I discovered jazz and blues...and never stopped loving the classics. I never, ever felt any attraction to Top 40, not Neil Sedaka, not Motown, not even Beatles. It just wasn't interesting. Now, my classical and jazz tastes have broadened further (opera, e.g.), and I only listen to a bare handful of my old rock records. I used to be a huge ELP fan, but now they seem pretentious and precious. Boring. Their place has been taken by Gilbert & Sullivan! I do like John Williams, but I find Empire of the Sun more interesting musically than Star Wars. The films themselves have no bearing on my preference--I was fascinated with the Empire soundtrack before seeing the movie.

Ah, well. There's plenty of music for everybody, no matter what one's taste. 'Scuse me now, I have to yell at some kids to get off my grass... :)

I'll look for a link, but have you listened to the OTHER John Williams? Absolutely brilliant.

Edit: here is a link - a good introduction to John (the non-composer) Williams

I love classics musics too...how bout u guys..?

Hi Keeah,

Many of us here love classical music. I for one have a very diverse taste from Traditional and vintage jazz to rock n roll, country & western, to classical music. I must admit, however, that I'm not an opera buff.

Some time back I put together a cassette of a diverse range of music for playing in the car. The first track was a Gregorian chant, followed by Mozart, Schubert, Simon & gar funnel, Queen, some reggae numbers from the film "The Harder They Come and ending up with a vintage jazz number "I've an Uncle in Harlem ( and he's the best uncle to me ) BTW I must look up that track as the lyrics are very humourous :). When I compiled the cassette, I wanted the tracks to be linked by musical mood, rhythm, lyrics and ideas. It worked pretty well.

Now, my challenge is to find the cassette and to transfer everything onto CD as my current car has a CD player! If only I could find a cassette player. :D

Richard, I'm no opera buff either however we went to the theatre in Canterbury a while back where they had a kind of best bits from the operas show and I have to say that I really enjoyed it.....of course unlike other shows, we knew when it was all over because the fat lady had sung!!

The Archangel

I like some of the more recognizable pieces from opera, such as this one from Turandot. I went to see this in Edmonton a few years ago.

And talking of fat ladies singing, I love Monserrat Caballé's voice

I like music you can feel, not just hear.

Here's Elgar

I believe Austria is also capable of putting on a show. Here's the New Year's Day concert from Vienna 2012, with the Vienna Boys Choir

Strauss
