What's new

What music are you listening to right now!?!?

Has anyone managed to watch any live performances of the music John Williams composed for Star Wars? I found this live performance of The Imperial March by the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Franz Welser-Möst at the Schloss Schönbrunn.Close your eyes and it takes you right back to the movie.

I have the DVD of this concert, and if it hasn't been deleted, I've posted it some time ago and it must be somewhere in this thread. They also played Princess Leia's theme:

Edit:
I've found it. It's still there. (2-27)

Having a blast of Rush's Clockwork Angels.

This Canadian trio has been my favourite band for more years than I care to count. I first saw them in concert at Wembley in England during their Signals Euro-tour. Since then, their music has mellowed somewhat, but they still make an impressive noise.

For anyone who has not heard this album, and would like to give it a look, I recommend working backwards starting with "The Garden". Diehard Rush fans will smile at some of the echoes of previous works that may be heard in various passages.

''Fly By Night' will always be my favourite Rush work.

Fly By Night is my favourite, until I listen to Hold Your Fire, or Signals or, or, (Get the picture?)

My favourite concert was Roll the Bones. I went to see that 3 times in a week.

I guess for me it's about a time and a place.
Whenever I play the disc, it's like time travel.

I was on the road for a bit tonight - and heard a
rare track on the radio. 'Message In A Bottle' as performed by Sting, solo, with one guitar, during the 'Secret Policeman's Ball' benefit concert.

I first heard and saw this arrangement, watching the 'SPB' movie at a cineplex in the 80s. Sting performed 'Roxanne' solo, first, during the same show.

Again, this is a moment on time piece for me.

I'm starting to wonder if more recent music isn't having the same appeal to me because I know there's less time on my clock, to make a deep connection.

Nah. It's because for some of us, almost everything done since 1980 is boring and/or ugly noise. I grew up playing and listening to classical, not pop or rock, so there are no deep R&R connections to anything in my youth. I became somewhat interested in progressive rock around 1975, going to some concerts and buying a few records. Then the rest of the world punked out, and when rock went boring I discovered jazz and blues...and never stopped loving the classics. I never, ever felt any attraction to Top 40, not Neil Sedaka, not Motown, not even Beatles. It just wasn't interesting. Now, my classical and jazz tastes have broadened further (opera, e.g.), and I only listen to a bare handful of my old rock records. I used to be a huge ELP fan, but now they seem pretentious and precious. Boring. Their place has been taken by Gilbert & Sullivan! I do like John Williams, but I find Empire of the Sun more interesting musically than Star Wars. The films themselves have no bearing on my preference--I was fascinated with the Empire soundtrack before seeing the movie.

Ah, well. There's plenty of music for everybody, no matter what one's taste. 'Scuse me now, I have to yell at some kids to get off my grass... :)

I usually listen hits from the 80s, because i consider that period with a very rich musical offering, especially rock and "sweet" metal type of music.. I like AC/DC, G'n'R, Nirvana, depeche mode and more..

A few years ago, I took voice training lessons. One of the compositions I had to and liked to sing (because of the challenge) is the first part of this video:

Dubrovsky, RTVE - J.S. Bach, Weihnachtsoratorium 31 - 35, 24 (Christmas Oratorio)

I still like to hear it, sometimes even when it's summer.
