I just bought my iPad but I still dont understand why most people are jailbreaking the iPad. Even the salesman at the Apple Store recommended me to jailbreak it but I refused..because I want to maintain its 'virginity'. Is it because we can download paid apps for free?

I'm very surprised an Apple employee would recommend Jailbreaking to you as this would be frowned upon by Apple.

No, jailbreaking is not done to get paid apps for free. This is Piracy and is illegal and we do not condone nor discuss this in our Forum. Jailbreaking and hacking does NOT equal stealing or pirating!

Below you will find a link to a sticky which will explain Jailbreaking.

No, it's because you can expand functionality for something YOU paid so much.

Well, that's a first that I've heard apple employees recommend a jailbreak.
But to answer your question, NO! There are many good reasons to jailbreak that have nothing to do with breaking the law. Read up on it before you ask as there is a lot of good information out there and especially on this forum. Try a search.

And your point is? The only way to retain it's virginity would be to not update or install any apps. Are you a virgin?

Do you want to get more storage out of your iPad? Do you want to use your device as a wireless hotspot? How about access settings you normally couldn't access? There you go, there is some things right there!

Paid apps for free would be stealing. Are you a thief or a troll?

So I have looked around a little and haven't really seen anything. Are we able to update to 5.1.1 or should we still wait? I have been following somewhat, and know pod2g states he has it working for 5.1.1

My recommendation is to wait - do not upgrade to iOS 5.1.1. The news may be that the iOS can be jail broken but, as a general rule of thumb, it is best to stay with the iOS you are in until a jail break is actually released.

That's not to say that you can't upgrade, but, to be on the safe side, I'd wait. Until the jail break is released, it's all conjecture and rumors.

I'll give people the benefit of the doubt. I don't think he realizes that the insinuation is that jailbreakers are thieves. There is a real lack of knowledge out there and I hope people do learn from this thread. It's not for everyone just due to the added complexity.

Is new ipad jailbreak released or not?
When i search in google lot of sites saying untethered jailbreak available for new ipad 5.1.1 but i dont see. Anything here.

Nope

I agree. But even amongst veteran JB'ers there's a lack of knowledge that Jailbreaking your iDevice voids your warranty. Very explicitly stated in the Apple User agreement. So not illegal but functionally there's a "loss of something" when you jailbreak that is never talked about in our enthusiasm. :-)

So if you are going to return it for a warranty issue just make sure that the os restored to original or is unloadable. Seems easy enough.

I can see why apple would not want to deal with problems introduced by modifications to the os. People would be calling them all the time to fix stupid issues they introduced themselves.

In no way can jailbreak affect your warranty permanently.

But your warranty is instantly restored when you press restore in iTunes. We don't talk about it because there is no problem. It is not a lack of knowledge on my part it is a complete and accurate understanding of the facts.

Well not so fast. We need to make intellectually honest statements. The User Agreement explicitly states that the warranty is voided upon changing the software. Something that's "voided" can never be fully reinstated. Now - where we "beat the system" is that when you do an
iTunes restore, how could any Apple rep ever know we were ever Jailbroken. So it's not that the restore "gets us our warranty" back - it doesn't. It "hides" our having played with their software. So we're really "getting away with" something warranty voiding. In the end - if you know how to restore your phone - the distinction I'm making is a moot point. But you used the term "warranty instantly restored" which is not technically an accurate statement.

Additionally a friend of mine that works for Apple tells me of new jailbreak detection tools they have. Apple would be foolish to try and clamp down on JBing too hard - but evidently it's now possible to detect a "once JBed" phone after its been restored.
