First, yes, you are going to have to upgrade to iOS 5.0.1 before jailbraking it again. However, that is only is you have saved SHSH blobs for that version. I am going to assume you do because your iPad1 is already jail broken, so those blobs should be saved. Hopefully, my assumption is right because you will not be able to do any of this if you don't have those blobs...

So, follow the process in this link to see (1) if you have the SHSH blobs and (2) get them download and put on your computer for later use: http://www.ipadforums.net/showthread.php?p=491479

Once you have iOS 5.0.1, then you can follow the steps in this post. The link to this post is also at the bottom of the link I just provided, so you won't "lose" it should you navigate away from this thread.

Good luck and do let us know how you get on.

Hi All

I have Ipad1, i have jailbreak using redsnow sometime back may be year+ old
iam running 4.3.5 tethered, iam bored of rebooting every time with redsnow. now i would like to upgrade untethered 5.0.1
so that i can off and on with out any software reboot.

i started TU to look my sshh blobs.

blobs.webp

i did not see 5.0.1 blobs, so can some one suggest me, how can i upgrade or get 5.0.1 blobs and upgrade to 5.0.1 OS, and jailbreak using redsnow.

Sorry, but if you don't have blobs for 5.0.1 (and that screenshot would appear to say you don't) then there is nothing you can do. Your only choice is to go to 5.1, but that too is TETHERED.

Thank you for your very helpful tutorial. Ever since Comex's jailbreakme.com technique in Summer 2011, I have been happily enjoying my cydia apps on my iPad 1. When iOS 5.1 came out, i began to wait for an untethered JB IOS 5.1. Eventually I decided to go Tethered, using redsn0w, following your tutorial. After thumb and finger trouble, 3 times, I got the DFU PROCEDURE to work, as you specify. I am now up-to-date with all of my preferred Cydia apps, but I am wondering "what's new since IOS 4.3.3 on my iPad 1"?

BTW re "tethered restart"' I just keep my battery st 100%, via a USB power source. hopefully, I wont have to do the DFU thumb dance for many a day.

Hello,

I am ready to upgrade an iPad 1 from IOS 5.0.1 to 5.1.1 with and untethered Redsnow jailbreak as per the sticky Jailbreaking Methods for the iPad but the first post on this thread shows instructions to jailbreak 5.0.1. Is this because the first post is not up to date or it is not possible to jailbreak an iPad 1 with IOS 5.1.1?

I have had great success Using iPad 1, Absinthe 2.0.4 - JB IOS 5.1.1, 6jun12

Highly recommend Absinthe 2.0.4 as the procedure to use. My iPad 1 now uses IOS 5.1.1, with outstanding results.

However, you must read every sentence with care - it is written in very precise, non-redundant language: "dense content"

Yes, it is possible to use the newest version of redsn0w to jail break your iPad1 on iOS 5.1.1. We had not updated the post for the new change; sorry about that.

So, there are two good jailbreaking methods for virtually any iDevice: redsn0w and Absinthe. It's an individual choice which one to use, depending on user convenience or familiarity with the jail break.

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Marilyn

P.S. And, I've updated the first post... Thanks for the heads up.

I JB'd my iPad 1 some time ago and found it slightly useful. I bought the 3G hotspot app (don't remember what it's called), and the app hardly ever worked (and when it did it was terribly slow), and beyond that I didn't find the JB of much value (aside from learning about JB'ing and Cydia), so I shut down the entire iPad 1 and reconfigured it to factory original settings (intending to "gift it" to my wife), but the wife didn't want it (yet... I need to do a better sales pitch), even after her Sony reader bit the dust...

So to make a long story short (sorry to dump all this on you guys), I'm interested in JB'ing the iPad 2 (why, I'm not sure) and will be researching the options in the near future.

Now for the BIG question about all this... I have just loaded Mountain Lion on my iMac and my Air (and will next week on my MBP/Retina) and am wondering if the JB will compromise the connections from iCloud that Apple is trumpeting with Mountain Lion!? I am not optimistic about this!

Not sure why you wouldn't be optimistic. Jailbreaking does not generally interfere with the way the iPad works normally. Therefore iCloud will be unaffected. I have all my devices jailbroken and am running Mountain Lion and don't have any problems. There are a very small number of exceptions, but these are few and far between and you are unlikely to run into them. There are usually plenty of threads here which deal with those problems when they arise ;)

To jailbreak your iPad2, make sure you are up to date on 5.1.1 and use the latest redsn0w. The process for iPad2 on 5.1.1 is a single click. No need for DFU mode or any other complexities. Simply start redsn0w and click jailbreak.

As Randy pointed out - jail breaking will not help you get Flash on the iPad. See this link for the latest on Flash: http://www.ipadforums.net/ipad-faq/54703-flash-ipad.html

As for the reasons for jail breaking, they are many. Have a browse over in the Hacking sub-section of this forum - there are lots of discussions about jail breaking over there. Oh, and start with this link, which will give you a good start to understanding jailbreaking: http://www.ipadforums.net/ipad-hacking/2838-jailbreak-explained-new-updated-2011-a.html

Hope this helps.

I have an ipad 1 with ios 5.1.1 on it trying to jailbreak it on Windows XP using the latest redsnow (Ver. 0.9.14b2), when I click on jailbreak, turn device power off and put it in DFU mode Redsnow ALWAYS crashes with Windows Error Report. I've been searching for a solution for this but haven't had much luck, but I have read something about downgrading the ios 5.1.1 to 5.0.1. Do I have to do this first?
