What I see in my backyard...

It has become quite the routine chore, I have to say Kay!! We actually bought pre-made juice and they wanted nothing of it. I knew, because they kept going to the feeder with the home made juice!! Such finicky eaters!!

No TV dinners for the hummingbirds, only Michelin starred dinners for them!

That's so funny about their clear preference.

I make simple syrup from time to time when I want to make a batch of cocktails like mojitos, but I never realized that birds would suck it up, too, lol.

I was out walking around this beautiful pond. The owner had planted Lotus Water Lillies. This fellow decided to rest on a flower bud.

What a beautiful photo!

The scale is difficult to judge but he looks too small to be a full dragonfly.

Thank you Stranding. If you tap on the photo, it will enlarge and you can see it is probably a juvenile dragonfly. Most adults in this part of the world are larger and have only one set of wings. But could there be two species of dragon flys?

I am so ignorant about these magical creatures (think of them in the same class as Ski's hummingbirds, except dragonflies are here to see, the birds are not). So have bought an app to help with identifying the UK varieties (more useful for me). I am literally starting from scratch...
Here is a quote from the intro which is helpful straight away:

>>>..."the Order Odonata, which includes both dragonflies (or Anisoptera, meaning unequal wings) and damselflies (Zygoptera, meaning equal wings)"<<<
(Text quoted from "Dragonflies and Damselflies of Britain and Ireland" by BirdGuides Ltd, written by Nick Baker.)

So looks like it's definitely a dragonfly, not a damselfly. A start.
Also says that there are around 5,500 species known worldwide, so quite a lot to choose from:-)

DH snapped these two female Adonis Blue butterflies last summer in the garden (or that's what we think they are from the butterfly app)

Dragonflies...love those creatures. They are so pretty when they are green with the iridescent wings. I have several that keep flying by and sunning themselves at against the brick of my house. Though my dragonflies are larger and more black with white stripes.

Stranding...So beautiful those Adonis Blue butterflies are. I love butterflies as well. Been chasing Monarch for the last month...have only seen it twice and both times without my calendar. Have also seen a yellow one with black dots and black tips...once again, only by eye and not with my camera lens!!

Isn't that often the way it goes? But one day you will get lucky, when everything is set up perfectly! Even for the Monarch--good luck:-)
Think the Adonis is rare here now, so he was lucky with this pic. Well, seeing any butterflies around is difficult now which is so sad.

It is a rarity here too. The last several years we have hardly seen any monarchs or even butterflies for that matter. Have seen a lot of moths which I think they are...but nothing else. So sad it is. :(

I have read that we occasionally get Monarchs over here as "vagrants" from N. America but the milkweed they need doesn't grow here.

I have made a promise that I will try and photo the moths too. Like others, I think of them as "also-rans" and all as boring "beige" too...but that's not exactly fair or correct! Some are really lovely when you look closely at the details.

So while I wait for a tramp Monarch (to parachute in from a helicopter?:-)), I will be watching out for the moths. The problem is you only notice them when they crash around the light while you try to read in bed!

You are too funny, Stranding!! Well send some of those vagrants our way so I can take some pics also...particularly those that jump out of helis!!

The moths can be pretty, especially the white ones. Though they are pests when the see light!!
